Does anyone have pictures of homegrown Avenging Angel revolvers typical of those used by Mormon Danites? Id like to build one out of a basket case older 1851 navy that needs resurrecting. Thanks in advance, it's bound to be fun! George.

Thanks for the google idea BPD, but I was fishing for talent among our brethren here on the forum. Bound to be some home grown sin here somewhere, :rotf: By the way, I was in Berryville the other day, how about that new electric co-op building that we're paying for? As Doc Holliday would say 'Isn't that a Daisy?' :shocked2: George

I had heard or read somewhere that one or more of those pistols had the front of the trigger guard cut away also. Show us your results. Not a very safe gun, but interesting. Sure would make a good conversation piece. Also would be interested in how it shoots.

It always seemed to me that such modified revolvers would be marginal in effectiveness. My 5.5 inch revolvers lose about 100 feet per second in velocity compared to their full length companions. The avenging angels would be similar to the single shot Deringers of the time but the cylinder gap and escaping gases I would think would slow the ball all the more in a revolver. Still at close range and with little or no medical care I'm sure the Mormons put many of their opponents six feet under.

Seems to me someone on this forum made such a critter but I can't remember who.

Thanks Long Johns Wolf, that's a good example of the 1860 cut down. My brother Tiny Briggs carried an 1851 Navy in Army caliber for years, and used a cut down Colts Dragoon barrel(3 1/2") on it for a 'Pocket' gun when driving a taxicab. Never had to use it, but pulled it twice on duty when another driver was in distress. He said you didn't have to hit the perp with a bullet, the blast alone would rattle the ears off a wooden jack@ss, and the flame would cremate everything within 3 feet :shocked2: I still have his cut down dragoon barrel, and if a Navy in .44 cal comes my way, there just might be a resurrection. Tiny made a brass blade front sight for it. I'm hoping to find an old .36 barrel for my .36 parts gun, I can't find the original barrel. Maybe somebody borrowed it out of my shop. Thanks everybody, this is going to be fun. George. :hatsoff:

I don't know much about the Danites or their specialized firearms. Interesting.

Years ago I was in a museum in Salt Lake. There
was an engraved Navy Colt with Porter Rockwell's name on it . I read a book about him once .

"the blast alone would rattle the ears off a wooden jack@ss" :rotf:

Another term I heard somewhere along the way and still use is "Knock the ears off a brass monkey"! :rotf:
I've also been told these "Belly Guns" are great fire starters as well!

Thanks Rifleman, I'd forgotten Saunders, been years since I visited. They've got a fine collection of percussion revolvers, But I can't remember if they had any short guns. I'll have to pay them a visit sometime soon! Thanks everybody for the input, it's what makes this forum great! George.

Snubbies are my favorite gunz. Fun to shoot, and easy to load off the frame.
Mine all have real front sight blades except the Capt. Schaeffer replicas because I could not bring myself to cut through the engraving. Even with that brass pimple front sight they are regulated to shoot playing card size groups at 10 yards.
SNUBBIES RULE!!

These are my 2. An 1860 and an 1851 both cut to 3" barrels.
