Here in East Texas weve been catching heck with all of the rain. ive got some good boars coming in to my spots. with all the rain and humidity is a flintlocks enemy. before this boar came in I had 2 groups of around 30 hogs came in the second time there was a fat sow I intended to shoot. I was sweating my flintlock was sweating, I got in a hurry and forgot to check on my 4f powder in the pan, when the fat sow was at 11 or so yards I squeezed the trigger and nothing. I pulled the frizzen back and my powder hd moisture in it looked aboul like ovr moist potting soil.
i cleaned my pan and reprimed. about 20 minutes the boar came in looking for a lady at around 15 yards I lined my .50 caliber flintlock up loaded with 80 grains 3f olde eynesford and a 370 gr tc maxiball squeezed the trigger he dropped got up and made 40 yards. I did not get a pass through the tc maxiball was stuck in the opposite sholder, he was slightly quartering away and I took both lungs out

Howie I'm really impressed! I killed Two last week but both with a Modern Rifle at night. I really really want a BP Pig Kill, but with 4 cameras out and 10 hunter only one pig was seen in daylight. We are all Coloradans so maybe we are just doing it wrong :dunno:

Nice piggy.

In North and South Carolina have found the humidity can turn the powder in the pan to a black goo or soup if it is there very long. On some days dumping and replacing every 15 to 30 minutes works, but on those ‘special days’, not much success. Find a feather in the touch hole and the process of charging the pan with one of those spring loaded pan chargers as part of the cocking procedure after you see game works best for me. After a damp day in field I empty my pan charger and refill with dry powder. I do save the dampened powder by putting it in a container with a desiccant pack when I am feeling frugal.

Doubt folks from places like Arizona will understand. And a second shot, not possible unless taken within a couple of minutes without a complete cleaning and drying of the bore. Just the the way it is after over 25 years of shooting and hunting in the Carolinas. Found it pretty much the same in Texas, having spent time in the Rio Grand Valley years ago.

Nice job Howard. another vote for 3F. Its all I use , never had a problem in damp weather but I still check it regularly though.
Thanks Mr. Dan we was catching heck with the rain most of the week I still gotta get the 3f the right amount in the pan. The 4F goes boom. That's why I switched. The 3f did ok I'm the problem by either not enough or to much in the pan if it's not raining the 4f makes a huge dofference

nice piggy … I hope the farmers (whos fields the beast would doubtless have trashed) appreciate your hard work. another vote for 3f, by the way … prime from the horn … one less thing to fuss with ...

up here in southeastern Vermont, it's too cold for boar.

so far...

Mr. Sean I pretty much hunt at night. When I'm getting pictures of big boars I always turn my cameras off. Of you notice when camera goes off hogs are looking at it they hear the shutter. Opening and closing. I have a bunch of red night hunting lights and I make some myself I wear a head lamp with a red led when I here the hogs coming or notice a big boar slipping in I turn it on my front sight is painted bright white. I can see my back sight to lone up my front sight and I hunt close ground blond to bait is 12 yards

MSW ive heard of boar up north. the misconception about hogs is the can adapt to any environment, there only requirement is water. hogs do bnot have sweat glands so they hold heat. Russian boar or eurasion boar can live in the snow and feral hogs have adapted to snow as well. they are omnivourous which means they can eat meat plant ccurion (dead animals) they are a apex predator they can eat anythings. on top of that pigs are one of the most intelligent of all forms of life they are either ranked 3rd or 4th depending on what book or report you see. the list is human, primate, either dolphin or pig

what did the bullet look like?? like to see a picture.. nice hog...
Michael I try to start saving them and showing the maxi ball flattened out but I tossed it. I guess I should do a necropsy th show what a pig looks like on the inside afer being struck by ball or bullet

DUDE!!! Get the mesquite in the smoker and start a batch of espresso bbq sauce. Your going to need it!
Forgot.... Chop a batch of mustard slaw to go on the rolls, I'm on my way! I'll bring the beer. I should be there in 2 1/2 days...............
