Woods walks are great fun. Before we moved down here I used to shoot at 2 clubs in the New Paltz, NY area that frequently held them. Haven't been able to locate any clubs down here so far. I shoot a .62 cal prb flintlock poor boy. I'm in the Van Wyck area of Lancaster county; about an hour north of Blythewood. If there are other like minds in the area maybe we can get something started. My only difficulty is that I'm 2months out from Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement and the MD says I'm a few more months away from handling recoil. PM me if any of you guys are interested.

Hi folk,

Just order my first traditional BP rifle and was looking for a community in my area. MuleBrain, is the Charles Town Long Rifles still up and running? I have to drive to Twin Ponds or Boggy Head anyways to shoot and it looks like your club had a lease nearby?

Would love to shoot with like-minded folk - and hopefully someone who knows what they're doing so I can learn!

None that I'm aware of, Semper Smoke. Like you, I usually end up at Twin Ponds -- kind of a long drive through Mount Pleasant to get there. I shoot a .45 cal. flinter from CVA I built from a kit back in the early '80s. I hunted with it this past year, but the old eyes, iron sights and low light are a tough combination.

That's too bad... Well, I generally try to make Twin Ponds Saturday as it opens OR Boggy Head Sunday around sunrise, depending on which morning I take a turn with our new little one at home (4.5 mos, not quite old enough yet to shoulder a rifle...). Hopefully I see you out there one weekend? I'll let you know when I have the Hawken in hand and maybe you can give me some tips:)

Hey guys. Things have changed for me, so l want be moving to Summerville after all. Therefore l want be running any shoots down there. I will be visiting there some. Maybe some of us could get together then and make smoke .

Charlestown Longrifles is still active, never stopped. You would need to contact the club president or secretary for information. If you choose to join, you will have a club member sponsor you for prospective membership and you would be allowed to visit a few times until the club votes you in as a member.
As Buck said in an earlier post, contact information is posted by NMLRA.

Great to hear!

A bit more pressing question for me at the moment... Are there any shops at all local that stock real black powder and percussion caps? The big box stores seem only to have the substitutes and shot shell primers, and even Carolina Rod and Reel was down to one box of #10 when I called!

Would be glad to. (4.5 months? Learning all about sleep deprivation, I bet. :)

Quick update - looks like Boggy Head is closed "for maintenance" with no re-open date:( . Didn't manage to figure this out til I had already driven the hour out of town to give my Hawken it's inaugral smoking...

I'm going to try for Twin Ponds next Saturday... has to be something closer!

ATP usually has caps and an assortment of round balls. Nobody local sells BP. We usually do group buys for club members at CTLR.
I recently saw a FB post showing a flaming refrigerator that had been used as a target at Boggy Head and left. Looks like it will be closed again for a while. I wish that they could come up with a volunteer range officer program to help keep the range open. Too bad.

That kind of behavior out there frustrates me so much. Most days I go out there (and I always go at dawn), I end up spending half an hour cleaning the range with a few of the other guys who show up early...

Twin Ponds is great, but only open Saturdays and much later. Is there a point of contact for making these decisions on the range? Would love to chat with them and see what we can do to help out.

A little further up highway 41 from Boggy Head , there is a crossroads where highway 402 and Steed Creek road intersect. Take Steed Creek down a few miles and you will find the ranger station. They will be able to give you information.

Moved from Oregon to Summerville, SC any muzzleloader clubs closer than Charlston Long Rifles?

Welcome to the area, Red Tail!! But afraid as far as I've seen, Charlestown Long Rifles is the only nearby club. There are a surprising number of people I meet who have old BP rifles stuffed away somewhere, so trying to poke around where they go shoot.

Hey guys...my move to summerville is back on .I'm moving in the last weekend of this month . If everything goes right l will be running some woods walk and novelty shoots . l look forward to meeting up with some you fellow smokepole shooters .
