Southern banded horn

I get enough time to myself in the winter for projects. Figured I'd better learn to make banded horns next.
The bands are cut from another horn rolling around my shop. The tip is turned from antlers. The base from walnut. Pins are pins used to fasten barrels to stocks. Overall length is 15".

The horn chosen for this was translucent. You can hold it up to the sun and see how much powder is left in it.

I assume a fine tooth blade? Then sand the edges?

The reason I’m asking ... my horns always seem too chip when sawing..

No. The rings go on to the shaping cone after a lard bath. Then you can cut them clean on a lathe. They cut like buttah,

They come out better than the pics show them.

Heating horn to 325-350 in lard will soften them. Heat it too long will melt them. You walk a fine line doing it at times.

Ah so...

I use plain vegetable oil, actually whatever I have handy including used oil from my deep fryer.

Is lard any better?

I find after cooling the lard is easier to wipe away. Oil keeps on creeping.
