I found an older model CVA sidehammer pistol in the local pawn shop today. It appears to be a kit gun that someone sorta finished. The barrel is still raw metal with a light rust on it but not bad .The hammer won't stay cocked, maybe a broken spring ? It's a 50 caliber with a kinda cool looking large clip on the side to hook from your belt. Asking price is $ 65.00.
I found a new replacement lock for sale on ebay for $ 55.00. The bore looks pretty clean and I don't think the gun has been fired much if at all.
I didn't buy the gun today. Anybody know of this pistol or own one?

CVA with clip on side? Possibly a mountain pistol, VERY accurate.

Probably wont need much more than a GOOD cleaning. Pics are helpful. For $65.00 It would have left with me.

It must be a Mountain no other pistol in my old catalog has that belt clip accessory. I agree it would have left with me.

I did a bit of research last night and found that it is indeed a Mountain pistol. I also found that Deer Creek has just about every part in stock for it.
I'll be heading back to the pawn shop today, hopefully to make a deal on the gun.

I'm not sure, but some of the CVA locks have a sear adjusting screw and if it is improperly adjusted that might cause it to not stay cocked. If that is all that is wrong, it is a simple adjustment fix. I would have offered $50 because it "needs work" and hoped it came home with me. I would still probably bought it for $65.

Well I finally made it back to pawnshop and made a deal for this pistol. It's missing the retaining spring for the ramrod but that's an easy fix. The hammer wouldn't stay at full cock so I took the advise of Kansas Jake. Indeed the sear adjustment screw was way off. A couple turns and back in business.
I spent the afternoon today cleaning her up, I also blued the barrel. Gonna try to work up a load for it. I figured to start with about 40 grains of 3f and a patched round ball.

I p/u one similar at a gun show for $15 quite a few years back. Same way, someone shot it in the white and never finished it. Let it rust abit but for the price and a flinter. Cleaned up so nice I almost hated to shoot it, but shoot it I did.

Dearmanct, you made quite the grab!
I have several CVA mountain pistols, flint & cap, that go along with matching rifles .45 &.50cal. You may find a charge of 30-35gr is very accurate. My .50's seem to like a bit lighter charge than you might think is needed....range is also something to consider so 40gr is not a bad starting load. You may find the original front sight to be short, aiming the pistol high depending on the range.... I've changed out the front sights on mine. The Mountain pistol is very accurate out to 50 yards and more. I've even spent some afternoons shooting 100yd steel with one of mine, and yes it will ring it if I can hold still and stop from wiggling long enough to squeeze the trigger :)
Have fun you'll love it!

I was hoping to do a bit of shooting this afternoon after church but of course it's raining again here in southeastern Oklahoma. Maybe sometime during the week
