IMHO: "Safety First"; HA/PC Second."
I figure if they had the eye protection back in the day, they would have used it.
I know some stuffed cotton balls or flax in their ears to help protect their hearing.
If boots that kept their feet unfrozen at -40° (or colder) had been available, they would have used them.
If they had had Gortex, (to quote Arty Johnson of Laugh-In fame): "You Bet Your Sweet Bippy" (end quote) they would have used that, too.
Same for all our "modern" stuff that keeps one warm and comfortable in the field. (or at home, come to that.)
Wear the "modern" stuff under your HA/PC stuff, if you want to look like you just stepped out of the 16th/17th or 18th centuries.
Better alive and well, than the HA/PC correct losing a finger/hand/toes/foot or limb to frostbite, or froze to death.
