This my sound like a strange question but I'm counting on an answer from the more informed T/C knowledgeable members. Does anyone know of a more traditional rear sight for a Renegade? Or is it a question of getting it dovetailed for a sight? I'm just wondering? Thanks

T/C once made a "primitive" rear sight which fit both Hawkens & Renegades once you unscrewed the adjustable factory rear sight: You the mounted the primitive sight into the existing holes. It was plenty tall so it could be filed down if necessary, but I don't recall whether it was adjustable for windage; i.e., whether it was dovetailed into the screw-on base. If so, I'd loosen it in its dovetail before mounting it on the bbl.

Those sights were terminally fugly and don’t think they went over all that well. Yes they could be drifted but you be hard pressed to do it without it bein’ securely mounted to the barrel.

I’d personally go with either version of the sight mentioned above. Looks good and easy to install.

And for what it’s worth, the undrilled version has dimples in it to mark where ya drill the holes.

I have one of the TC primitive sights on a Hawken kit I put together in the late 70s. It has worked well for many years and is high. I needed to file it sown about 1/16" or a little more to get it on target. I also replaced the front Patridge style sight TC had at the same time. I always liked. I fact, I picked up one of the TC primitive sights at a local hardware store recently that was new old stock that had been hanging on the wall for years based on how the package looked. I'm have a future project in mind for that one.

As Bubba.50 noted, they screw into the place where the original rear sight is mounted. No filing of dovetail slots etc. needed.

I actually found a company that sells the base sans sight. The company is Cain's Outdoors. They show the sight base as "out of stock", so I called them. I spoke to Scott Cain. Great guy and was willing to talk and not brush me off. He said the machinist they used was retiring and would not be making them anymore. Scott said he was looking for another machinist and hoped to have a supply in three or four months but to check the website periodically for updates. Bubba is right in their looking ugly and I can understand why you had to file the rear sight. But I didn't want to have dovetail cut unless that was the only way out. Thanks to all.

I have at least the TC primitive sight and may have a front that goes with it. Would ship he rear for $50 and if I have a front for another $15.

Thanks for the offer but I am not in any hurry right now. Between the weather and money it will be 4 or 5 months before I do anything. You may want to list them in the CLASSIED forum, there may be others interested in them. Thanks again for offering them.

ppg1949,
I'm going off of memory here, but did TC change the holes spacing at some point?

These holes look closer together than the official TC primitive sights.

Haven't looked at it in a while but if I remember correctly the wholes are elongated. The sight can be moved slightly forward and back or used on other guns.

nkbj, I'm not 100% sure but I think it might be. I think bubba 50 is one of the resident T/C experts or maybe Zonie can answer it. The one I looked at was a base that screwed into the original screw holes with a dovetail cut in it for the sight. As Kansas Jake said, the sight was high and needed filing down. It seems like T/C was always changing something, possibly for easier production. Sorry I can't give a better answer.

A few Renegades had a small sight that had about 5/8ths inch hole spacing. Most have the standard spacing that’s about 7/8ths inch. Early Hawkens had holes spaced about 1 & 1/8th.

White Mountains and Penn Hunters mostly had the Renegade spacing but some probably also had the Hawken spacing.

Probably a couple other spacings on some other models.

Looks like this TC sight has a longer center to center dimension on the screw holes.

The ones with the longer hole spacing were for Hawkens. Most of the T/C primitives I’ve seen had slots instead of holes so you could use them on all models.

Different hole spacing on various barrels was one of the reasons I suggested The Gun Works predrilled offering.
