Well, just acquired a .54 T/C Hawken with a drilled and tapped barrel for scope mount, plus hammer spur offset to accommodate accordingly. I did know of this prior to purchase and price was great. You see I happen to have an early GM IBS 1”x32” 1:70 twist .54 roundball barrel and surplus T/C percussion lock. Both of which now reside on the “new” stock.
Now the concern...
The drilling and tapping appear to my eyes as being quite deep. They measure as follows, from breech towards muzzle; 0.141”, 0.127”, 0.131” and 0.130”. Hole spacing for each pair is 0.860” (to provide an idea of location in relation to breech), with the first hole drilled exactly a hair ahead of the breech/barrel seam line. Spacing between hole pairs (hole 2 and hole 3) is 2.558”. All are measured center to center. The barrel is a 1” .54 percussion factory “K” model Hawken 6 digit serial number, 32xxxx. With the depth and location of these tappings, any concerns over firing this barrel within the original T/C recommendations as per their manual?

I’m a tad confused and may need a refresher, not sure what keys are being referred? Then again, I can hide my own Easter eggs anymore! I do have a surplus of barrel keys so I expect it must have been a conversation we had awhile ago.

I was thinking you recently inquired here about keys for a great plains rifle. Must be confusing you with another member.

I have barrel that was tapped for the an ugh scope. I called the local hardware store and cleared bringing in the barrel. They found set screws for me that fit the holes. I'm thinking they were 6-48 thread. Anyway, it shot fine and none of the screws blew out.

Thanks all. As you can see I have run in screws to somewhat fill the holes. I would like to keep the barrel as someday my eyesight may force the installation of a glass sighting system, but for now I am getting by. My only concern was about whether or not it was still safe to use, and appreciate the feedback.
Thanks again.
