What say you about aiming and eye dominance? Most of the shooters I know who shoot right or left handed pair that with the same handed eye. My granddaughter is a right handed rifle shooter. She is stubborn and always uses her left eye. (for sure she is left eye dominate) Her performance is not bad, but, wow, is that awkward! This post is not about correcting her, because grandpa is not in charge.(LOL):ThankYou: I am asking if you, or anyone you may know, shoots with the eye that does not match the hand of the rifle?
Flintlocklar:dunno:

Is she ambidextrous ?

It is possible to change your eye dominance.

Just give her safety/shooting glasses with the left lens painted over until she leans to close that eye.

Right handed and left eye dominant here. Learned to shoot a rifle with left eye closed, shoot pistol right and left handed using my left eye, but wing shooting a shotgun right handed is pretty much a lost cause. Cannot shoot with both eyes open as left eye ‘dominates’, but it is not lined up with barrel..... with left eye closed lose depth perception. Can shoot trap very well, but pitiful at skeet and sporting clays. Have tried glasses with different prescriptions for each eye.... imagine one eye looking for enemy aircraft and the other looking for landmines while trying to aim at a target between the two.

Teach her to shoot left handed.

I was right eye dominant and right handed and lost the right eye to macular degeneration. Learning to shoot LH was difficult and took a long time so while learning I rigged up a set of sights to be able to shoot RH using my left eye. Can't post but can send pics to someone who can.

DONT MAKE HER HATE TO SHOOT!! If she enjoys shooting just let her shoot, I doubt it will be her life passion. Be thankful that your grand daughter enjoys shooting with Gramps, enjoy the moment.

My daughters are right handed left eye dominant. They shoot long guns lefty and handguns righty. I would explain what she has and that it is common. Tell her what other folks do.

I shoot my rifle right hand and my pistol left hand. I am left eye dominant but I learned to shoot long guns right eye from a NRA hunting instructor when I was 12 yrs. old.

I agree with that 100%, but if she doesn't correct the problem it will likely become a handicap.

It's easier to retrain the eyes than it is to train all the muscles on one side of the body.
If she is ambidextrous, then train her both ways.
If she continues to shoot that way she runs the risk of recoil or other injuries if she ever shoots a big gun.

I went through a period of left eye dominance.
I put a tiny piece of masking tape on my glasses that only blinded that eye when wing shooting in order to make my brain use the right eye. After a few weeks I was back to normal....well eye wise that is!

In some shooting sports both eyes are often used or you shoot with both eyes open. IPSC/USPSA for example. This became a problem When I started shooting trap league after shooting pistol I found myself suddenly missing birds. What happened was, I was shooting with both eyes open and my left eye started tracking the birds, I became left eye dominant. Which resulted in me missing because I wasn't aiming down the barrel. A shield on my glasses to discourage my left eye from acquiring the target, and a conscious effort on my part to close that eye restored my accuracy to normal.
We have dominant eyes, but eyes (or the brain) are also trainable.

Teaching her to shoot properly requires teaching her to shoot using the appropriate eye. Remember, your eye is one of your sights for the gun.

I'm right handed, left eye dominate. My right hand and arm are stronger and better for detail work, but my left hand and arm are more "steady" for lack of a better word. If I carry a shoulder bag it is always be on my left side, regardless of whether my strap is hanging off my left shoulder or across my back on the right. I'm a photographer by profession, and have always carried my camera bag on the left and mounted my camera to my left eye. My left hand and arm acts as the steady support for the camera and works the lens from below, while my right hand operates the camera itself.

Long guns I shoot lefty and sight with my left eye. I can shoot right handed okay and even sight with my right eye okay, left just feels more natural and the way I've been doing it since I was a little kid with a pop gun. I shoot pistol primarily right handed, but practice both, mostly sighted with the left eye. Shooting with both eyes open is no bueno for me.

I know I could train my brain to use my right eye, but see no reason to. My body adapted and learned to do certain things left handed way back when I was a kid.

You might suggest to your granddaughter she try shooting left handed and see which she prefers. So long as she's not putting her face directly behind the rifle where she could get hurt, let her do whatever she is comfortable with so long as she is having fun. I've got older lefty friends who tell real horror stories about being forced to do things right handed as a child back when we were stupid enough to think left handed was somehow wrong. I assume it would be the same in reverse. So safety should be your only priority over having fun.

I’m left handed and right eye dominant. I shoot long guns left handed wile closing my right/ dominant eye and that includes shotguns. Handguns are shot left handed while closing my non dominant eye. Traditional archery is shot left handed with bow canted to allow both eyes open.

I’m 55 and have had a couple shoulder surgeries so I don’t think I’ll be changing anything. It’s worked pretty well for me and have won quite a few shooting matches.

My two sons were a real challenge my oldest son is left handed. When I started trying to teach him to shoot I of course told him to shoot left hand.Well we worked at for about a year and a half. The boy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn! So I got frustrated one day I said son just try it right hand started hitting the mark right off!! He is right eye dominant.

Well a few years later it was time to start my youngest.
When he was born he was born cross eyed we had to have them corrected at about 6 months of age. He is right handed started him right hand but this time I noticed he craning his head over so he could use his left eye. Told him go to your left side his right eye is unsteady so due to the surgery so he is left eye dominant. Turns out now at 14 I think he's the best shot in the family.

Extremely right handed, left eye dominant. Vision has always been my limiting factor and I can't use binoculars because I get two images and lots of vertigo. I shoot everything right handed. I close my left eye to shoot rifles. Shotguns I took a long time to become proficient in since I have depth perception issues. When hunting and having to snap shoot game, I have no idea whether I shoot with one eye closed or both open. It is purely instinctual/muscle memory.

Handguns has been a journey. Up until a couple months ago I shot with my left eye closed. I puta red dot on a pistol and suddenly realized I could shoot with both eyes open and I actually did better that way. Now I am relearning sight picture and retraining myself not to habitually close my left eye when shooting.

Right, left? Doesn't matter. Only odd thing is using pump shotgun. So use to R/H it's odd to pump right handed.
