I have a CVA Mountain Pistol in 50 cal. Does anyone know what the barrel twist rate was for these pistols from the factory? Never had a chance to check it yet as my son is using it this week hunting does and for the last several weeks.

The CVA Kentucky pistol in .50 caliber has a 1 in 20 twist, it's marked on the barrel. Don't know about the Mountain pistol but would think it's the same.

Well now my friend i see you have experience with the Mountain pistol. You shooting round ball for target or for hunting? I want to try some Hornady PA conicals but not many people seem to have experience in this area. I want a 25 to 75 yard doe buster. My feeder is about 45 yards from my stand and i dont want to pop a doe at 25 yards with my '06, but a head shot could save a lot of good meat. Have you tried the PA before?

Target shooting. I shoot a 0.490 round ball with 0.017" JoAnns #40 cotton drill cloth. The patch is lubricated slightly damp from my old supply of NAPA water soluble oil, 1 part oil to 7 parts water. Powder is 30 grains of 3fg GOEX. Factory sights shoot way low. Be prepared to spend some time at the range to get the point of impact to meet up with point of aim.

Thanks. Got it back tonight. My son never even loaded it. This weather is quirky here in Texas. 70 degrees one day with family over so no time to shoot. Then next day raining and windy and upper 30 degrees. These old 68 year old bones can't take much of that. F I could get some dry days no wind and in the 40's I'll spend the day at the bench. Gonna use Swiss 3F or T7 3F I do imagine. Those are the most energetic. Got .490 and .495 rb that I may start with but will end up trying the 240 grn Hornady PA conical. Hoping for a better smack down punch.

Going after nagahs? A fifty grain charge behind that .490 ball drop white tails at thirty five yards, I know from experience. And drop dead groups at that range.

highly doubt they would put a 1:66 twist on a 9" barrel. If anything it would be similar to traditions trapper and use a 1:20 or faster.
