PA flintlock deer season.

Today was the second day of the flintlock deer season.
And it was a great morning in the woods. Just not MY morning. I was tucked up against a blown down tree top long before first light. Little drizzle spitting off and on. I was there because yesterday I found three scraps in a row still be worked. Ten minutes after first light I had three does coming my way. Then they suddenly spooked. Tails waving. I know they couldn't have seen me but the wind was changing direction left and right so I figure they winded me. No other explanation. Its tough when the wind keeps changing direction. Fortyfive minutes later I had a small deer come within 20 yards. Couldn't have been 70 pounds. I let it walk. About 10am I had a fork horn buck show up. Had to let it walk as well. Got to be three tines up here to be legal. Then minutes later another smaller rack fork horn showed up this one with brow tines but it went by at a steady walk just a little farther out than I wanted to shoot at it moving. I'll see that one again with a little luck.
So the deer are certainly moving today and I'm having some lunch and heading back out.
Yesterday I saw one big doe but got no shot at her.

Good luck on future hunts. Always fun to see deer whether one shoots or not.

In early and late seasons I have had exceptional results stopping and/or calling deer in close with light "doe talk." Mostly low volume contact calls. Many hunters seem to focus too much on buck grunting or do not try calling deer at all. I found that Jerry Peterson's (founder of WoodsWise calls) deer vocalization research and calling methods were spot on.

Great narrative...

Tomorrow will be my first day and I can't hold back any longer. I was in Knoxville, TN over Christmas and fractured my ankle, I got x-rays and saw PA at the VA clinc there; they let me think that it was a lot worse than it really is. It took a couple of weeks to get the swelling down enough to drive home, I got here yesterday. Got new x-rays and saw the Ortho at the VA hospital here today and he said that I could walk on it as much as I could stand it. so I'll suck it up and be out in the morning.
