Naturally I picked my 45 smoothrifle for this afternoon hunt, why? Because it's brilliant that's why.
Something like fifty grain of powder and near 3/4oz of shot and it gets the job done with little fuss.

It was a cold wind but get out of it and in the sun I felt hot.
Rabbits are breeding, the bucks are in top condition, mine is a perfect specimen.
The rooster is my 22nd pheasant this season so far.
Happy hunting everyone.

Curious as to when we will see a post from Jess? She always seems to be where the action is.

Honestly haven’t seen a pheasant in the field since the late 1970s or early 1980s until I kicked up a couple tracking a deer this year. Forget what they taste like, but remember I enjoyed them.

Great job Brits!! So is using this smooth rifle load combination similar to a 28 gauge shotgun and how does it pattern? Well enough apparently!! Greg

I guess so...never really seen it like that.

It patterns very well. I have wing shot many times with it to around thirty yards.
Pheasant, pigeons and crows have all been taken off the wing.
You could easily think .45 is to small for a shotgun but no....it never ceases to amaze me. Whether it be with shot or balls it delivers the goods.

Every time I read your posts it brings back memories of hunting back in the 50's 60's and 70's back in New Jersey. I have an old Pedersoli Kentucky 50 cal. flintlock that I can no longer get parts for the lock. Since reading your posts I am thinking of sending the barrel out to be smooth bored, I already found a lock that I am attempting to fit on it. This gun is very light and since old age has not been kind to me I need a lighter gun. Where I live in Pennsylvania 50 yds. is a long shot on a deer, most of the trees are not much higher than 50 ft. so a smooth bore 28 gauge is not a handicap. Thanks for the encouragement.

Do it bud, if you can. It would be nice to read about it and if you can get under a squirrel or two I am sure the young boy in you will emerge.

Man, I would love to have some of those rabbits you kill! Those dudes are huge! Makes my mouth water just thinking about frying some of those up. Thanks for sharing.

Darren

Yeah, sure beats the scrub brush bunnies here in the Midwest. They say a camera adds 10 pounds, but my eyes went directly to the rabbit, or do they call them hares across the pond? Every thing else looks right.
