Nice thing about the GPR is that you can buy the fast twist barrel in .50 cal. and the slow twist in .54.

Curved steel buttplate looks better but can bite the shoulder a bit with heavy charges and conical heavy bullets. Won't notice it hunting but bench shooting for sighting in ruins the fun for me. Never minded the recoil much when younger but a few heart surgeries and a mostly destroyed back makes these things count.

Still, I like my GPR for looks and reliability. It's a bit heavier than what I'd like. Haven't noticed a problem with flashes in the pan but that may be my rifle.

I have owned a Lyman trade rifle for 20 years or so.
It is handy in the woods and shoots real well.
Mine is a .50 and I load 70 grains of 3F and a Hornady PA hunter bullet.

I have GPR in .50 cal with fast twist barrel and bought the .54 cal slow twist for round ball. Both barrels shoot very accurately. Its great that you can have one gun and drop in another caliber barrel. First thing I did when I got this gun was to put 5 coats of oil finish on this gun and the grain just pops. Nice looking wood thats hidden on the factory finish.

yes i read a few post about them.. i tryed to get a local dealer to order one all sold out every he looked.. going to look it over good. i hope its a good one my old lyman great plains has been a good . it should be in fri sat ...

Any particular brand of oil finish? Would like to see for myself as the factory finish is kind of drab

I found the factory finish on my GPR to be a bit dark and "muddy". It cleaned up fairly well after removing some of the factory finish/stain with alcohol and 4O steel wool. After a final wipe down I finished it with a mix of 100% tung oil and Tru-Oil. The grain actually looks pretty good after cleaning off the excess stain...

The finish on the gun is very dark, little light sanding and steel wool will lighten up the wood. Used tru-oil
then very light steel wool to take some of the sheen off.

the deerstalker came in today picture 202212 any way to fix it??? and the trigger is almost dangerous it might be 2 pounds... anyway to make the trigger a little heaver??? and the barrel fit tight in the stock

The in-letting on that wood is in serious need of some woodwork. The in-letting depth on my GPR wasn't near as bad - between a 64th and a 32nd of an inch to deep on the GPR. The only thing that comes to mind on the trigger is would a different spring help...

Have owned a few over years, and would buy again. Last couple have been kits, and fit and finish weren’t perfect, but they were shooters. Put a L&R flintlock on the last one. Cock piece and frizzen were poached by the original purchaser, so I went with the aftermarket lock. A real PIA, but a different topic.

Wound also suggest a 54. Just like the way they handle when compared to the 50. Personal opinion.

Personal note.
The GPR is a fine gun, for the price probibly the best over the counter gun. It looks pretty close to a classic Hawken. One fine gun.
The trade rifle is modeled after the the Leman trade gun, or I should say inspired by. It’s a long wayfrom real trade rifles. Howsomever it’s a nice looking gun. I think the best looking of that style arm. That triggerguard is very comfortable. And Brass is pretty and ‘old timey”
Few half stock flint locks were made. And the general styling of both those guns is post flintlock era.... so the one you like best is the bes.
