Looks like the original has no catch. Probably just a cam over spring to hold it shut. Note the notch to accept a finger nail to allow the lid to be lifted.
 
I am going to guess that the catch for the patch boss release is that crescent at the butt end of the patch box. Pull it back and the lid should pop up.

Different builder's used several unique release mechanisms. There may be a release hidden in the toe plate.

Could be a catch. Would have to find a better image of an original. The problem with a catch here is it may be easy to trip open by accident.
 
The TOTW patch box does not use a catch, it is spring loaded in the closed position, don't know if it is H.C. or not but it works well and easy to install.
