I have a old custom built rifle that has .437 ball stamped on the barrel. Is this a 45 cal or 44 cal. Use it for hunting and just want to make sure if ever asked. Either way I think it will do just fine on deer size game...

Roughly, the caliber is 44, maybe 45 if you measure to the bottom of the grooves. I'd call it a 44 just to be different from all the 45 caliber rifles out there.

You have a great input stamped on the bore. Use a ball of diameter 0.437" which you are doing as noted on the target. How thick is the pillow ticking? What lubricant did you use on the patch?

Give it a try at 25 and 50 yards.

Call it whatever you want. "George" would be good. (-;
Many rifles were not built to perzact modern specs. As long as you have a mould don't sweat the nomenclature. Just shoot it.
