I use an 1817 common rifle worm on all my guns. I wrap either Brillo steel wool and or a coarse sponge for cleanings.
Ive seen a ww2 german gun cleaning kit with one ,you drop the toggle thru for a handle, and pull the patch thru on the string
Do you use a Brillo pad for regular cleaning?

I think Spudnut used the Mauser cleaning kit as an example of the endurance and cleaning utility of the old technology. I get the tow to the breech by pushing it down the barrel with my ramrod. No need to pull the breech plug.

I use the steel wool Brillo (soaped) and work it into the worm then attach to the rod and clean it out, it cleans up the breech area really well. As far as the worm, potential scaring the bore, its possible but over time the bore would smooth out with use and cleaning.
