Thanks Spudnut. I should have thought of the small dowel. I wrap the string around the ball of tow.
Ive seen a ww2 german gun cleaning kit with one ,you drop the toggle thru for a handle, and pull the patch thru on the string
 
GERMAN CLEANING KIT. how do you pull it through the barrel of a muzzle loader.one end to the other? a GERMAN MAUSER is a straight shot with the bolt out of the gun?
 
Do you use a Brillo pad for regular cleaning?

I use the steel wool Brillo (soaped) and work it into the worm then attach to the rod and clean it out, it cleans up the breech area really well. As far as the worm, potential scaring the bore, its possible but over time the bore would smooth out with use and cleaning.
