My sister in law lives on our property in a travel trailer. Her grandkids get on the bus when it's still dark (daylight savings time). Between the pack of dogs near by and the wild hogs around here it'd just one more thing to worry about.

Hey Eutycus!

Speakin’ of invasive species, I shot another Nilgai last Thursday evening south of you down in Kenedy co. Big bull. Didn’t see a single dang hog. And I wanted to stick a shoat on the pit while I was down there.

It was sarcasm .... chain shot is used in canons To take out large objects or masses; I suppose you could load a Brown Bess with a small chain but I doubt it would have same effect.

Does that not require two barrels and precise dual ignition?

No. In fact a couple years ago somebody was marketing a similar round for 12 gauge that had 2 large projectiles wired together similar to chain shot, and stuffed inside a shotgun shell. For a front stuffer you'd have to make a paper or cardboard cup for them. I doubt terminal ballistics would be very effective tho - not enough velocity or weight for more than a few yards.

I figured if anybody would have come across a hog or two it would have been you.

We've hunted hogs on the red river for decades. My old hunting buddy preferred a 22 WMR with Winchester FMJ's, they never let him down. I saw him deflate a 100 pounder one time with his folding pocket knife, it looked like he was riding a bucking horse... lol. I killed a 150lb boar with 22 LR rifle, 2 shots in the ear and it dropped.

ALL animals can be deadly, 2 local people were killed a few years ago by a bull camel who didn't wanna leave his mare. I'm friends with the responding deputy, the story is chilling.

But back to Feral Hogs, we never had a problem with them hurting us, they were never aggressive unless they were cornered in a trap or pen. We've been walking out of the bottom at night and have them flush like quail, brushing against me leaving the area.

But most seem to have bought into the hype. I'm always cautious, but never been skeered of them yet.

I HAVE seen what they will do to a wounded deer... only the hooves and part of an antler left.

Like most animals, they USUALLY are more afraid of you...

Yeah! Saw almost as many nilgai as we did deer. Saw one bull I bet would go 800 lbs! Saw a few javelina but not one hog! Even saw a few quail. Will head back down in January.

I’ve had hogs almost run me over trying to get outta Dodge, but that’s as close to being charged as I can get.

Had little piglets running between my legs too! I shot a sow once off back porch that was in the yard and one of her youngins’ ran right up to wifey thinking she was her mom. Looked up at her let out a squeal, and took off for points north!! LOL!

Hey Einsiedler... if you need someone to help you thin out those pesky Nilgai... then i'll be your huckleberry...

The only hog I ever had charge was a 70lb boar. We had trapped a litter and sold all but 4. Decided to raise them to butchering size.

They kept digging out, as hogs do, and we were trying to ring their noses.

One jumped the gate and off it went, straight into the fence corner. I grabbed a shovel and tried to haze it back to the pen.

It was cornered, lowered its head, snorted, and came at me hell bent for election. I side stepped and cracked it with the shovel on the snout. Down he went, but not for long. We did get him in the pen. Took them to the scales a few days later. Decided to cut our losses.

Somebody said the cure for boredom is adventure. I've never been bored when hunting hogs, or working them. They do not bluff, and I've been 'Fence Posted' a few times, LOL! Once a friend and I were castrating about 30 baby pigs, I held them and he cut them. All was well 'til the last one, who managed to wriggle around on me and bit me on my pinky with one of his little needle teeth! A 200+ lb. man jumped straight up from a seat on the ground and gave a howling, whirling Dervish performance while reciting various ugly porcine pronouns in Portuguese. Dang finger didn't quit hurting for a week. Consolation was the pig probably hurt worse than me!

That chainshot would make the hogs "bleedout" right?
A good two blade broadhead, Bear Razorhead, Grizzly or similar is a better choice.. Hogs aren’t grizzlies. I know a guy who marketed them as “poor man’s grizzlies” but he private admitted it was what the sports wanted to hear when they came into camp. He also had a pretty impressive scar on his calf right in the meatiest part from a hog that was only partially controlled by one of his catch dogs. Doesn’t seem fair to blame the pig for that though, my friend was attempting and was in the end successfully stabbing it to death with a big pig sticker.

We used to hold them upside down between our knees for the operation. What a damn racket they make! Our Doberman would be slobbering the whole time, because of the squeals of pain and because we would toss the scraps over the fence where he could catch them. We’d squirt a bit of kerosene into the wound and turn them loose... they were not happy little piglets I’ll tell you.

Here's a pic of one a local guy had a run in with, and what he said about it:

MODERN guns again, what happened to TRADTIONAL?????????????????????????
