I guess I'm just another old dinosaur clinging to outmoded technology. I still use a compass. I used it for years cruising timber and just go used to it. It must work 'cause I'm still here.
May be true, but do you know where "here" is?????
LOL, bunch of us old relics here.
I was filing a part last week when my son dropped by,
He asked me why I wasn't using the Dremel kit he gave to me for something a few years ago, I did not even think about that as I went right on filing away....

YOUR SPOT GPS SEEMS HANDIER THAN ANY OTHER DEVICE. IS SUCH A THING AFFORDABLE? AND WHERE COULD YOU GET ONE?

I ONLY NEED GUIDANCE TO THE KITCHEN AND BATHROOM BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF FOLKS WHO STILL WANDER THE REMAINING AMERICAN WILDERNESS WHO COULD SURLY USE ONE.

THIS SORT OF REMINDS ME THAT AS A KID I WAS STRONGLY ADVISED THAT THE "SUN SETS IN THE WEST".

I HAVE SINCE LEARED THAT IT SETS A LOT OF OTHE PLACES DEPENDING ON WHAT DATE IT IS. RIGHT NOW IT SETS IN THE FIRLY EXTREME SOUTHWEST AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO TILL DECEMBER 21ST WHEN IT WILL START MOVING BACK A LITTLE MORE NORTH EVERY DAY
YOU CAN'T TRUST ANYTHING, PARTICULARLY OLD SAYINGS.

SDSmlf,
That SPOT seems a good idea. I used to use a GPS, but when I got into the woods it would lose the satellites. Then, when it picked up a signal again, it would connect the two locations with a straight line that had no connection to where I had been walking. So, I quit using it. Seems like the SPOT doesn't have this problem?

I still use road maps when traveling. My family marvels at my sense of direction. I may not be a dinosaur but may be pushing Wooly mammoth status. Glad you are still giving us advice Dutch.

Basic SPOT is just a signaling devise (uses GPS for location but no map for you). They also have a GPS/signaling one. Garmin's has InReach that is a GPS and signaling device. On the Garmin and better SPOT you can send out longer messages. Both take subscriptions for the messaging part. Basic SPOT $150, up to Garmin over $300.

Up here the sun sets in the fall and rises in the spring. Whats with this “West” thing??
Walk
WHILE WE TOUCH ON "OP THERE"
I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED WHAT THE 4TH OF JILY FIREWORKS LOOK LIKE.
DOES THE ROCKET EXPLODE INVISIBLY UP IN THE BRIGHT SKY AND DO TH PEOPLE SAY "OOH?" AND "AAH?" WITH A QUESTION MARK AT THEEND?

I DON'T THINK OF IT SO MUCH AS ADVICE. JUST THOUGHTS CROSS MY MIND ABOUT ODDS AND ENDS.
ON THE SUBJECT OF RUMORS OF MY DEATH BEING MISTAKENLY SPREAD FAR AND WIDE I HAVE SOME LATE REPORTS THAT MY SON WITH HIS WISDOM OF THE MIDDLE EST HAS GOT ME BACK ON THE INTENET AND I CAN BE APPROACED ON EBAY. I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT AT ALL BUT I HAVE GOTTEN A FEW ODERRS FOM WHO SEEM UNAWARE OF THE FORUM.
MY SON WHO HAS NO ITEREST IN ML RIFLES O BLACK POWDER IS INVOVED IN MAKING THROWING KNIVES OF SOME BEAUTY WHICH HE SELLS ELSEWHERE..
I ALWAYS THOUGHT KNIVES HAD TO REVOLE END OVER END AS THEY FLEW TO THE TARGET. THEY DO BUT THERE APPAENTLY IS A WAY TO THROW THEM AT ANY DISTANCE AND THEY MAKE THE ENTIRE TIP POINT FOREWARD. A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING BUT AFTER A YEAR OR SO OF PRACTICE HAS BECOME RATHER ADEPT. I DONT THIN THEY ARE THE STYLE THROWN AT RENDEZVOUS/ THERE ARE ALL SORTS OF DIFFERING SPORTS OUT THERE BT OUR SMELLS BETTER.

DUTCH SCHOULTZ. ALIVE AGAIN.

I'm glad Dutch is still with us. I always thought that being out in the hinterlands hunting or doing something like hiking was to be free of civilization. I leave the phone at the truck or in camp so I won't be bothered by outside interference. I'm a dinosaur and still just have a flip phone. It's a phone, period. It's turned off while on a hunting trip.
You've spent the day. wet from the dripping trees. tired of creeping slowly through the woods. hoping to avoid the famous snapping twig. Wow, there's a good sized buck strandinbroarside about 40 yards right in front of you. You begin to to put pressure on that sensitive trigger. the front sight right where its supposed to be. This is the ending of a lifelong dream and suddenly

Your phone rings, the deer is a memory and your Mom says " When are you coming over for dinner?"
