I shoot trap and I got a garage sale deal on close to 50 lbs Lawrence #2 lead shot that I can not use for the trap range. Would it be usable for casting round balls, or is it to hard?
Melted down bagged shot is reputed to work really well in cast bullets for the unmentionable guns.
Just enough hardness to reduce or eliminate leading compared to pure lead.

I have some muffin pan ingots a buddy of mine gave me after he melted down a bunch of shot he’d been salvaging from shotgun shells, it’s hard, i can’t even begin to scratch it with a nail, it was free and he offered so I took it, I had planned to cast some balls with it but never did, makes good bullets for the 45-70 though.

Lead shot is harder than lead for round balls. It will have antimony. But you may be able to get it to shoot as a ball; especially in a smoothbore. The old fingernail test - if you can scratch it with a fingernail it is good.

I've had to really work at it but I can scratch most scrap lead with enough effort.

Would think what you have has a ‘trade value’ of somewhere between $80 and $120. You should be able to work out a trade or possibly sell. While you could use for casting round balls, would sell or trade for something closer to ‘pure’ lead more suitable for casting round balls. There are enough challenges in this game with everything as it is supposed to be, why up the difficulty level? Just my opinion.

Or sell it in the sale forums 50 lbs ships in a medium USPS flat rate box.
Add 17 bucks to the sale price as shot is worth $45-50 per 25 pound bag in that big of size. Get the idea?

There is a sale forum on this site cannot offer a better suggestion here.

IF you do that I'd be interested in a PM about it....

"Magnum shot" has antimony to harden it, but so does lead wheel weights. "Chilled shot" might also have some antimony, but all of it contains arsenic so that it becomes rounded when dropped from the shot towers. Either of these would be OK for casting balls for smoothbores, but "magnum" might be a bit hard for rifles.

I would suggest selling it as #2 shot for those who want it. It can be broken down into smaller quantities and shipped in small, flat rate boxes. SFRB ships for about $7 and will hold at least 10#.

If you really want to get rid of it just blend in a little (handful) at a time when you melt your "regular" lead. But you do have a sellable commodity on your hands. Don't get in any hurry, it'll keep.

The above thread is the most valuable in this post, and easy to explain to the wife.
"I GOT to get me a smooth bore gun to shoot all this lead" just think honey, I just got me a gun that is free to shoot.
50 pounds of shot = 533 shots of 1 1/2 oz. of shot......what better reason to get a new gun!
Can you think of a better reason to get a new gun?
Well gosh, don't you need to get a smoothbore to use that shot in?

Get rid of it for health reasons.
I squirreled away lead every chance I got. Melted it into ingots. Pilled the ingots into a milk crate outdoors where the pot was. Then came winter.
I marched outside to bring the lead into the basement. Like it needed to be indoors. Forgot to bend the knees when I snatched the 130lbs. up off the deck. Blew out my bad disk.
Now I sit in a chair watching my deer season slip by me.
Yep. Get rid of it. It's trying to hurt you.
