Out of habit I keep trying to hold my tc hawken the same way as I hold modern style rifles (butt up to the shoulder). I seem not to be doing this right as it doesn't settle in quite right and I get thumped good even with modest charges. No doubt the metal butt plate is part of the problem, but usually when I have issues with recoil it is a problem with my hold or stance. Bso how do you hold a hawken? How is it different from how you hold a modern stocked rifle?

The deeply curved butt plates are meant to be held in what is often called a bicep hold. Instead of on the shoulder as you would hold a modern rifle or shotgun, you want the butt plate to be placed on the arm, just below the shoulder joint. This places the your face in a better position to avoid the "cheek slap" often encountered with these rifles. Then your arm/elbow is elevated and the recoil is absorbed in the twisting or your torso rather than slamming your chest backwards.
