Distilling is not legal in the USA. neither is lots of stuff but BATFE will care and stomp your pets and shoot you when you get raided for it. FACT
You can own a still, just can’t legally distill anything without a permit. And just so happens to be pretty easy to get a fuel alcohol distilling permit at no cost from the Feds. Technically anything you produce will be for your car, truck, lawnmower or whatever. Just isn’t meant for sipping......

Now state and local laws, an entirely different batch of wormholes. Will depend on where you live.

Federal distillation laws.

If you have a clue what your doing, and you really should, you save the heads and tails for the mower and enjoy the the hearts. Just don't start runnin' shine over state lines and BATF wont give 2 cents worth a damn. Worked with a lot of them and we never "stomped a pet" or shot anyone. In fact, knowing how the liberal media can't stand law enforcement these days, especially feds under Trump, when was the last time anyone heard of a BATF raid with gun play??? Enough with the hyperbole.

When I was about 18, I went with my father to an old homestead in the mountains north of home. Chickens running everywhere, goats roaming around, old wooden screen door on the dilapidated house. The farmer comes out and asks what dad wants. He asks the farmer how much for chickens. The old man says 6 chickens for $7, 12 chickens for $ $12. In my mind I has visions of having to chop off heads and pluck smelly chickens on a Saturday night. They discuss the weather and a few of the good old boys who live nearby and dad hands the farmer $12. The farmer disappears into a shed behind a corn crib and comes out with a gallon jug of clear liquid. My dad tells me to carefully put it in the car. Between the seats and pad it with the blanket he kept in the trunk so it would not roll around. I put the jug in the car and turn around still stupidly expecting to see a crate of cackling chickens show up. It wasn't until we were a half mile down the road that I understood what just happened. I was puzzled as could be because my dad never touched the stuff. It was a retirement gift for one of his deputies.

Distillation is quite legal. Its WHAT you’re distilling that becomes the problem, and only then if you don’t pay the taxes!
Water distillers are sold everywhere.

What you do with it after you make it is a personal decision. Maybe you put in fuel tank, maybe you drink. Legal to make with a Federal permit. Connect the dots and read between the lines.

The thing is that US law requires one to "denature" any alcohol distilled, which simply means poisoning it. Wood alcohol is added to make it legal. If the revenuers inspect and find good old fashioned ethanol that hasn't been tainted, you're busted.

The ozarks are full of meth makers, few get caught till they blow them selves up.
A crime is a crime. Driving 60 in a 50 because it’s rural and there is no cop around is still a crime. Yeah it’s not like selling drugs robbing a bank or shooting a conical in a round ball gun, but it’s a crime.
You can make beer and wine. So you won’t get flagged for buying brewing stuff.
If your not selling, giving it to kids, blowing your self up, no one is going to care if you run off a bit of shine.
