When I joined here the was an EXTREMELY vocal and hateful group that rode down hard on folks not being period correct/ historically correct.
Not only did the parts all have to be pc/hc, if you didn't built it using "Their" approved methods of construction you risked being burned at the stake of public opinion on here.
And God forbid you even Think about using anything other than a PRB!!! Dan'l Boone never used such contraptions!!
I was taken to task by several for wanting to build a left hand Early Lancaster. I was actually told, on here, to just learn to shoot right handed!!
And the lock was too big, and so on and so forth. I'll never try to pass it as anything other than MY interpretation of a left hand early Lancaster, if such existed.

If you want to be 100% pc/hc FINE!! If you want to poop in the woods and use tree bark and leaves cause your GGGGG grand pappy did, FINE! If you want to rub 2 sticks and make a fire AWESOME! If you wanna kill a deer, brain tan the hide, stitch up a set of clothes, GREAT!
BUT DON'T BUST MY B@{{$ CAUSE I CHOSE NOT TOO!!

THANKFULLY, most of those folks left when the forum changed, or they mellowed out, or died.
I don't see the hatefulness here I did 10 years ago. THANK GOD!

Things I always want to ask the 'Thread Counters '
1. Did you drive a car to this shoot... or walk for 5 days.
2. Did you get your flu shot?
3. Do you drink chlorinated tap water or use tooth paste?
4. Have you been vaccinated?

And my favorite.....5. How are you typing this post? Shouldn't you be writing this on velum, using quill and ink, and posting it in the Town Square?

It's your money, your time, your sweat, and your materials... build what you want!
I did.

Perhaps you have this forum confused with Frontier Folk....

That aside, frankly, I have found the "anti-historically-correct" crowd to be FAR more vocal and hateful....which is why many people with good knowledge to share simply left this message board and others.

Judging others: (Not always a popular practice)
Just a little yardstick thing I do:

Capt Jas. 23/2422 = .9% popular posts.
ETERRY 161/1103 = 14.6% popular posts.
Grenadier1758 605/3613 = 17.7% popular posts.
Griz44mag 464/1320 = 35.2% popular posts.

I wish we had a "Don't Like" button to push.
Being intolerant of others that do not meet your view of the world is not a great way to make new friends.
Accepting others who may have taken a slightly different path and sharing your traditional ways may enlighten and enrich them (like it has me) I now enjoy both worlds, have some items that are and some that are not.

ETERRY
1. DRIVE
2. YES
3. YES
4. YES
5. Well, here I am!

I enjoyed that - EXACTLY the way I feel.

There is not a single person here that is "anti-historically-correct". Please - NAME SOMEONE. The fact that they are here and own at least one traditional firearm makes your labeling a farce. Not everyone can afford a $2,000 replica or a $10,000 original.
There is no "ANTI" here. What I do see is the mixed mode shooter/collector refusing to be bludgeoned by those "purists" and are willing to call bad behavior out to the woodshed.

So with my comment of what I find personally appealing, I was judged. I made no comment for what I believe others should find appealing. Everyone can enjoy the hobby as they see fit. That includes me having my own opinion. I hope this resulted from ignorance as opposed to malice.

Capt. Jas,
Likes weren't being counted until the new software was installed on the Forum. I think the statistic does not accurately reflect actual popularity numbers and isn't a factor to judge our input on the forum. I do feel good when I get a like, but I don't want that to be a driver for my input. Nor do I want to use likes as a value factor to judge a posting. Each one should stand on its own merits.

LOL, I do love a good rant! I couldn't agree with you more. I took a gun the was litterely on its way to the crusher. It was so cut up you had to squint pretty hard to see the potential. Sombody had attempted to make a sporting gun out of it and it was just terrible. The first push backs I got was "you're erasing the guns story" when I suggested building what amounts to a "sympathetic restoration" meaning I would with my limited talents and resources, attempt to build a firearm that could have existed in 1862. I know the wood doesn't match exactly. I know the sites and sling are reproduction. I know Bridesberg never built a two band musket during the civil war. But it's hard to argue with the results.
Before and after.
It's fair to say everybody on this forum has been great with they whole idea of resurrecting and rescuing this old gun.
To everyone who took the time to look at it, thank you. To the gentleman who started this thread, I'll watch for every post. If there's anything I can help with, just ask.
Neil

I was not aware of that and did not take that into consideration. I stand corrected.

I could care less about any popularity contests. Didn't know they existed or care. I took issue with the poster (who was accusing others of judging ) using his "yardstick" of popularity to judge me as if my comment on this thread (which was my total PERSONAL opinion) attempted to insist others should have the same opinion. It was my hope it was done by mistake or ignorance as opposed to being mean spirited as my post only expressed my opinion. There is plenty of room for all facets of involvement.

Hi ETerry,
I basically agree with you but I do not like or respect "straw man" arguments where you set up conditions that no one can meet and then knock them down because they cannot meet the perfection implied in your conditions. This is an all too common dodge and logic fallacy and needs to be called out for what it is. Based on your straw man why not bring an inline to a re-enactment or wear sneakers and a hoody. Of course that comment is equally a "straw man" because it implies you if you are not perfectly correct, you need not worry about anything. People can be on a spectrum of historical correctness and being fastidious and detailed about a time, place, and technology is a lot of fun and educational despite driving to an event. Moreover, there are re-enactor units that are very strict on period accuracy with every right to maintain those standards and others that are not, and those who are strict are not hypocrites because they vaccinated their children. I will write again that in my experience, the persecution felt by some about not being "HC" on this forum is largely in their own minds.

Actually, when I posted this morning I was referring to (and thinking about) my desire to build a left hand flintlock. I recall the part where I started banging my head on the keyboard was when I was told to "just learn to shoot right handed and buy a right hand kit. Also was told several times to send the blank out to have it precarved; which I took to imply some doubted I could do it, (I probably couldn't, but Ken could). Also told repeatedly set triggers were the only way; that very few could make a single trigger usable. BTW, my single trigger breaks cleanly at 4lbs, 2oz, thanks to my friend Ken overhauling it.

Dave I have the utmost respect for you and your work. You are truly an artist and expert craftsman.

I joined this site to learn, discuss, get good ideas, not to be popular. Thus far I have succeeded.

If you want to keep company with period correct minded people then do as the Romans do. I personally don't, so it makes all my other thoughts, interests and decisions super easy. If you are a square peg dont expect to fit in a round hole is all. Nothing wrong with either road.

I posted to this earlier, but I'll throw my opinion out again so it's fresh. I enjoy the firearms of the period, or more to the point, the type of firearms of the period. Flintlocks especially. That said, I don't give an airborne intercourse whether it's totally PC or HC. To me Im still getting the experience of what it was like to hunt with early technology. Now as to the clothing of the times, I have absolutely no interest in doing that I prefer modern warm legally allowed blaze orange clothing and whatnot. The Guns of the times are what interest me the clothing you can keep all that I'll stick with my Gore-Tex Etc

I think it serves if your going to an event to be in your time along with your gun. Should you want to just shoot the gun that’s ok, if you want to try to be correct that’s good too, what ever you want to enjoy the sport of shooting the gun.
I THINK correct is good. However we all miss the mark. We all choose what’s the line we go to, what’s acceptable to us.
You shouldn’t take a TC Hawken to an ARW event. On the other hand a 1777 charley vs a 66/63 won’t pick up my ears.
Do you have enough egg shape to your wrist or too much, are your sights early or late? That’s going to make me yawn.
Mixing a 1750s vest with 1830s broad falls for me is a no no, but a 1750s vest with 1770 breaches , you got to look close to see it.
Is your tinder box late- early? Hmmm. How about the ears on your pot? Are they correct?
At some point we all fail... that’s ok, we’re on a path not at a destination.

Yeahhhhhhh, NO!
I built a gun out of junk. It looks ok, shoots OK. It's now worth more then the sum of it's parts but that's not why I built it. I built it to keep this piece of American history from going to the cops gun buy back crusher! People who "got it" were happy to lend their expertise on just about every part of the build. To them I'm forever grateful. Further, I'm happy to pass along anything I've learned to anyone who can benefit from it. That's why I'm here.

I shoot sevenX3 in my Pa Pellet flinter. 80 grains to be precise. I am trying out switching to Goex 3F. If I like it better Im going to use that.
