Nothing beats Barricade, IMHO. I use it in all gun bores. Other than that maybe BreakFree CLP is very good. Any good gun oil will also work with caveats.

Maybe it's changed in the last year or so but, Barricade isn't available in California.
It seems Birchwood Casey for some reason refused to put the California cancer warning on their Barricade label so California wont let it be sold in that state. At least, that's what I've been told.

As for me, I use Barricade and agree with the others. It is a petroleum product but it drys into a awesome coating of rust protection that doesn't need to be cleaned out before loading and shooting the gun. The dry coating does not combine with black powder fouling to make hard fouling like regular petroleum oils can.

While you won’t find Barracade on the shelves of stores in California, I’ve ordered it from Amazon and had it shipped to my door.

Like many here, I have what I would modestly call more than a few muzzleloader’s. Some are stored for extended amounts of time. Think they call it “ Long Time Storage! “.

Anyway, they are totally cleaned and properly lubricated inside and out. Lastly, I treat their bores with a coat of BC Barricade. I recheck and apply a second coat. Then the muzzleloader goes into long term storage. It might be up to six months to a year before I check some of these. Never had a problem with any of them. Snow white patches always when the bore is swabbed.

The muzzleloader’s I shoot often receive the same treatment with barricade just as if they’re going to be stored long term.

I personally give BC Barricade an A+.

Respectfully, Cowboy

The previous statement made by SD is so true. I have been using Amsoil Firearm Lubricant for rust preventative, stuff works great and is full synthetic.Just use alcohol on a patch and run down the barrel before I get ready to load my rifle after it's been stored. Works great for lube on your Lock assembly as well. Give it a try, you will like it. Good Day, Gordy

I have used without fail for at least 30 years, RIG. Some guns left 10+ years and were perfect. The other things may work, I don't doubt it, but RIG has always worked for me.

I have used RIG as well for guns I put up and may not shoot for years. Every 6 months or so I get all my guns out, swab the bore and give them another coat of barricade or whatever I have in them. I trusted Rem oil on my first build and now have a slightly pitted barrel, I use better stuff now. To say I was shocked to find rust in the new Rice barrel is and understatement.

I am meticulous in my cleaning, somewhere along the line this one slipped by me.

Other products work, but once clean I rely on Eezox for ‘long term’ storage. It’s a nother product that drys to a non oily film. Find it works, plus have a couple quarte if it.

I completely agree with this. I started using Eezox for high power rifle (I know, I know...) barrel treatment to reduce fouling and improve groups. It was recommended to me by a competitive benchrest shooter. It worked so well I use it in and on all of my guns now. It has everything you could possibly want for gun care CLP, yet it completely dries. You apply it using a very, very thin coat and it reduces all fouling including powder and if it's a quality bore, basically eliminates lead and copper fouling. Makes cleaning all bores much easier. Since I've started using it I've had very little use for any other type of solvent/protectant. I could expand on the benefits of it on modern weapons, but I will refrain due to obvious, but the benefits to ML'ers almost as numerous.

Lots of good info. here . Thanks for all the replies. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to use and get it headed this way. I had no idea there was so much to choose from.

Like many, back when I got into muzzle loading again I read and tried about all the latest and greatest rust prevention products, but I always come back to my original process: "thoroughly scrub with brass bore brush and swab clean with alcohol soaked patches, then wipe and park an oily 10W-30 engine oil patch down the bore.
