A feller gifted me an old buffalo robe. It is at least 20 yrs old. The problem is, it has gotten stiff. The hair still is attached well but the hide is not very 'bendy'.

Any ideas on how to soften the hide?

Phillip,

The problem without being able to see it in person, is I wonder if the hide/leather was tanned correctly to begin with? If it was, then a leather conditioner like Lexol or similar product should work. However, if it was not tanned correctly, then a leather conditioner may not be enough to fix the problem.

Do you have a professional taxidermist anywhere close to you, who you could take it to and see if it was correctly tanned to begin with?

Gus
