Hello everyone,
This is my first year hunting with a flintlock smoothbore.
I have been out 4 times this year rabbit and squirrel hunting and been successful,
But i am planning a trip to the remote woods this weekend and feel as if i am bringing way to much ammunition. Including a 1/4 lb powder horn and about 4 pounds of assorted shot, is this to much for a weekend trip? Any tips on carrying shot on your person without the use of a shot bag or speed loaders thank everyone in advance

I think a lot depends on the anticipated amount of game you will be seeing and what type of game. Something like geese in the morning, grouse at midday and rabbits or squirrel in the afternoon. Also you did not say if you would be carrying all your powder and shot on you or if some will be left at camp. Britsmoothy & boomerang are both right. I carry about a pound of shot and powder on me. But if I'm camping, I have more at camp.

Thank everyone for the reply’s! I’m thinking now about bringing 2 powder horns one on me one at camp . 1 pound of assorted shot #6,7, 00buck and a few round ball in the possibles bag and 4 speed loaders in my pocket . And 3 pounds at camp .
I will be hunting rabbit, grouse, squirrel,
Etc... I feel over prepared being with a modern shotgun I would only bring around 20 shells with me . But I feel changing to bp shooting I need more ammunition but then again god forbid i get stuck in the bush. the extra ammo will be a godsent
“ round ball and 00buck are for bear defence not shooting small game lol once again thank everyone for the input

Seems like no matter where I go with my muzzleloader I run into someone that wants to shoot it and that turns into a short plinking session.

I meant, don't put all your powder in one horn or flask and don't put all your shot in one bag, same for caps. In other words, have a back up. That way you don't necessarily have to carry it all and you don't have to worry about running out.

Yes I thoroughly understood. I run out of a main camp and cache supplies there, at the same time I carry shooting supplies in different areas of person, same with fire and different methods of starting fire. Thanks for helping me clear that up.

I've been known to do the same.
