First post, came to this site to ask the pros! Over the last few years I haven't been real pleased with the mushrooming of my sabots (little to no blood, no knockdown power) Fortunately I haven't lost any deer and have made good shots. I'm looking to switching to a hollow point of some sort. I have shot all of my deer with shockwaves and Hornady sst's. I bought some barnes expanders last year to try but couldn't get them down the barrel, way way too tight. Any help is appreciated. If you are wondering i'm shooting 2 pellets of triple 7 powder and use shotgun primers. Weapon of choice is a Traditions Pursuit

Thanks!

Welcome oakave84, Zonie will explain it to you. I just want you to know some one read your post.

I'm sure he would say something like this.

Well, I'm glad you joined us. :thumb:

One problem though. The only guns we are allowed to talk about on the forum are the kind that was in use in 1865 and earlier.
Your Tradition's Pursuit is a modern style gun that doesn't fit that requirement so we can't talk about it or the modern ammunition it is designed to shoot.
There is another muzzleloading site that is set up for modern muzzleloaders. Our forums owner also owns this one and it looks like it is a good one. Not that I'm trying to drive you away. In fact we would be more than happy for you to stick around. Who knows? You might even get interested in the old time guns we like so much. :)

Here's a link to the modern site.

Try Lord Keane’s bullet from the 1840’s.
Still works today!

Welcome to the forum. :)
My comments about modern guns and the bullets they shoot that was posted above is right on.

If you want to talk about the kind of lead bullets that were used before 1865, there's no harm in doing that. We even bend the rules slightly and allow talk about some pretty modern lead bullets as long as they don't use a sabot, they aren't jacketed with metal and they don't have any plastic parts.

We do have a member that only shoots solid lead bullets for his hunting. He's up in one of the Northwestern states where long range shots are the only kind he gets. Of course, he's using a side-lock rifle to do this so the gun and the bullets do fit the time frame.

Stick around. There is a LOT of knowledge on our forum and I'm sure there are things you will find useful. Like I said before, "Who knows? You might even find a old style traditional rifle that you want to get." :)

One thing you will find a common thread to on this forum is that nothing works on game as good as pure dead soft lead!
In your case, think old school cowboy action .45 lc lead bullets and maybe a cheap Lee sizer.
I like to play with them in my .45 side lock.(I still prefer a patched round ball)

Interesting. Where do you buy them/the mold?

I made the mold and cast my own.
This 50 cal Bullet started out with testing HP diameters needed to expand at the minimum 1000ft-lbs energy (with a corresponding Velocity needed to achieve). Found one needs a HP of 1/2 the OD to expand at this Energy (Vel).
But, I have alway been intrigued with Lord Keane’s bullet in WW Greener’s Book ‘The Gun and its Development’ - so why not see if I could duplicate it.. Pure lead worked at reduced Vel to simulate down range energy, but hard lead fractured the bullet into 4 pieces. We shot 4 Whitetails last fall from 3 different hunters from 50-110yds- every bullet had 1 entrance hole and 4 exit holes.!
Worked just like we tested.

Here is my 50/475gr HP.
I’ve had Accurate Molds copy this for others.

Recovered HP on far side under Hyde of a big Whitetail - went thru both shoulders, shot from about 80yds. Bullet only lost 2gr. lol

Sorry for bouncing around between 2 bullets, but they are nearly the same except for the cavity.
