Hey, who's to say some old timer, back in the day, didn't wrap some leather around the handle of his pistol? Could happen.

Rat, very good point. I've seen original rifle stock repairs of wet rawhide stretched over a cracked portion, then allowed to dry. So it probably is likely some old timers may have done the same to their back up pistol.

Plains tribes, and others, used rawhide for bow backing so any observant trapper would have understood the technique and used it for repair, to provide a better grip surface or plain old decoration.
