Hey guys I’ve seen some of these Hot Shot nipples here and there and I have to ask, are they worth buying or just a gimmick? Is there anything to gain from them?

DW, if your talking about the Hot Shot nipple with micro hole in the shaft, I had a friend used one. His rifle hammer would blow to half cocked after firing. He installed the HS nipple and problem solved. We were both new to muzzleloading and didn't know to check to see if the nipple he was using had an enlarged hole on the bottom where it enters the drum. They claim to make velocity more uniform but I've never any seen in data for that. I might add if your getting consistent ignition I would not worry about them.

They are supposed to be able to direct more heat to the powder charge. This is important if you are using the synthetic powders as they require a lot more heat to ignite. The Hot Shot nipple is designed to ignite Pyrodex reliably. I use them in my black powder only guns and believe they are worth using.

Have had better luck (longer life or wear) with Treso Ampco nipples when shooting conicals. Found no advantage when using black powder, and actually find the Hotshots wear much faster than the Treso nipples. Just my opinion.

They are the only kind I use anymore. I started putting them on my guns back about 25 yrs. or so ago, and have never had a problem with one that I can recall. I think they are well worth purchasing.

I don't understand why there is so much fuss about how long a nipple will last...?
They are one of the least expensive parts you will ever need.
A nipple is an expendable and VERY easy to replenish part.
You remove it every time you clean anyway.
Buy a Hot SHot, try it, Buy an Ampco and try it.
Use what works best for you.
EVERY gun is like a woman, (sorry ladies, just my opinion) it will let you know what it likes, so don't fight it.

Not a gimmik. They were designed by Dan Pawlak, the inventor of Pyrodex. Dan was a genuine rocket scientist specializing in propellants. The problem of Pyrodex being hard to ignite in an ml rifle was solved with the design of the Hot Shot nipple whose interior shape comes directly from rocket propulsion technology. I believe they are made from the same hard brass alloy as Treso nipples. For my perc guns they are all I ever use. BT: Dan Pawlak, RIP.
