the more I shoot this thing the better it gets. I just came back from deer hunting this morning, diden't see a thing. so I decided to unload my gun after it had been loaded for about 3 days. I did some off hand shooting at 50yds. the group on the right is offhand, I did hit the first two lower on the paper from a flinch, but settled down. the middle is off the bench, 5 shots I think. it is shooting better and better the more I shoot it. the load is 55gr. of swiss 3F with a ballistol lubed .18 pillow ticking patch. a home cast .395 lee ball, distance is 50yds.

Is that your deer load or your squirrel load or your load regardless of the quarry ??
In Maryland for deer I have to use 60 grains of powder. For squirrels and other small game I use 30. I do a double-dump when loading for deer.

That's pretty good shooting with a cartridge gun. For flint it's incredible, and in offhand flint it's amazing!

Dave In the great state of SC we are free! for now anyway. I am a southerner and have lived here for my entire life of 62 years and will go under here. it is amazing to me all the nonsense "laws" people have to put up with in all these other states! I always want to be fair to the game I am hunting, I think 55 or 60 gr. charge will take a ball in one side of a deer and out the other, he cannot tell the difference. yes that most likely be my deer load as accuracy is way more important to me than 75 fps.or so. and yes we can hunt with just about anything we want to in SC on private land,,,,,,,,,,

OH I'm not questioning YOUR load..., I was just curious, as I thought it a bit stout for a squirrel is all. :D The People's Republic of Maryland has some very silly game laws. Some I won't mention for IF the wrong-somebody from the DNR read about them, they would tend to "correct" the silliness by adding additional balderdash. I agree that the load you have is perfectly fine for harvesting deer, and I have always taught hunter safety students that there is no difference between dead or more dead as far as the animal is concerned. :thumb:

that's right Dave! it is about location, location, location, of your bullet/RB that makes the difference! and in SC we "harvest" corn, but we kill animals!:D

You want to hunt where there are screwy regs, come to Pa. Still can't hunt on Sundays, yet anyway. I hear they are considering it though. Oh and for deer here one must use a .44 caliber muzzleloader larger. Will a .40 kill deer, without doubt. But , for some reason the powers that be disagree. It is what it is...
