Once, I was in my fav gun store and found a nice old flinter on the used rack. In looking at the bore, I asked for a bore light. No matter what we did, we could not get light to shine up through the touch hole. We finally realized at the same moment, the rifle came in loaded and no one checked.

That was "buck and ball", several small balls, not a full size caliber; like the 'buck-n-ball' loads in the .69 cal. muskets; they did that back with the flinters, too. I've seen the x-rays in the publications, too; interesting!
In the case of the Defoe novel Robinson loads one musket ball as he is about to go hunting. But as he hears about how tough the game is he thinks about it and adds more ball until he has five loaded.
