I was looking to buy a range rod, but then thought I'd check with my favorite business supplier - McMaster Carr.

Part # 4568T12 ($12.14): 3/8" x 36" 6063 aluminum rod with a 0.145" hole all the way through and ready to tap with a 10-32 tap. Then I found a handle, part # 2454K64 ($3.63).

Problem solved.

You might want to add a bore guide.

I read somewhere that the least abrasive rods are the ones that are harder than the barrel (think stainless) and the more abrasive are the softer (think aluminium and brass).
