I wouldn’t put much trust behind a .31 except to the face.

Reminds me of my father telling me of an instance where a scorned woman bought a .25 ACP, went to her husband’s office, and shot him in the face. The little bullet stuck in his forehead as it couldn’t fully penetrate his skull. Of course my father’s also known for embellishing stories...
 
There are a lot of folks who carry and/or rely on little .25s and .22s for protection and they often do the job as prescribed. The little .31s are in this same category. I'd prefer a .36 but they are larger/heavier and not always suitable.
