Interesting project. I’m now convinced that it can’t be done because so many people can’t conceive of it. Probably why I haven’t invented anything noteworthy...

But it’s interesting, it’s never been done as far as we know, it’s your time and money and who knows, you may learn something new. Definitely worth doing.

Yeah, you're the next Edison. Good luck building that better mousetrap.
LOL!! I have trouble remembering what day it is.And the Poster is Re-thinking the cow magnet! If you want to use a Magnet please use it on your modern guns, maybe you could shoot magnets out of your new gun.

I’m not a huge Vonnegut fan but he once wrote, “I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

Grub for thought there...

Yeah, you're the next Edison. Good luck building that better mousetrap.
No... Edison was kind of a crook, really, and made his fortune ripping off other inventors. He didn't invent all that much and if he'd won the electricity wars we would all be using DC current instead of AC. This idea has no commercial value, so he would have passed on it anyway. But thanks for wishing me luck.

o_OIf you use duct tape, it'll be just as hideous to look at,but slimmer.
A solution for what most consider a non problem.
Now, I grant you this post was written on Friday the 13th,.........................o_O

Why? Because the duct tape will have an actual hold on the barrel. Relying on magnetism alone to hold a barrel in place to me is ridiculous. You have no actual mechanical tension on the barrel with a magnet, and unless you use a rare earth magnet you're going to run into problems with the barrel remaining in place.

I'm with Sidney, couple three tight wraps with the tape. This is easier for me. I do laud you for your thinking of new stuff though. Tape is now, magnet is down the road a little.

I think part of your issue with using a magnet will be muzzle flip. When shooting a rifle, muzzle flip is less prominent, so your analogy of shooting rifle with no wedge is not the same. Your wrist is not going to be able to control the muzzle. If I were you I would figure out a way to hold the thing down when you test it. or you could have a 54 caliber barrel protruding from an eye socket! especially if the magnet you are going to use is weak enough to just pull the barrel off. Although a fixed hold on the pistol will not be the same as holding it in your hand. it will need to be able to rock in order to see if your theory is correct. Because while the force is straight back without the rocking motion similar to your wrist, you might get a false positive result.

In the video link below (SORRY FOR THE MODERN REFERENCE) she maintained control of the grip. if nothing had been holding the barrel it would have flown back at her head.

Another thing to maybe consider is not making a hooked breach, but some thing that actually locks in place. A hooked breach is designed to come apart with a lift of the barrel.

Just throwing it out there for you to chew on. Please be careful!

out of curiosity, how thick are these magnets? That's going to be your minimum web thickness. How do you propose to hold the magnet in the stock? Epoxy glue? Since they're cow magnets, how are you going to keep the cows off of the gun?
