I have a old Hawksley powder flask that I want to use. what are the dram masherments on the spout, four settings in drams. Some body help me ? I want to carry it in the field with me. I want to shoot 40 grains and 50 grains of powder what setting should the measurement be on? I know I have to convert drams to grains. Thanks

1 drm equals 27.5 grains of powder . Most powder flasks have adjustable spouts that start at 2.1/2 drms to 3.1/4 drms this is for a standard 12, 16 or 10 bore shotgun ,there are flasks for larger and smaller bores

Set the flask at a dram designation, dump it into an adjustable grains powder measure at full capacity, then slowly shove the piston up until the powder is level with the top, then read the grain quantity.

Actually there are 27.343 grains to a dram. In practice a quick calculation of 27.5 grains per dram won't mean anything in observed performance for a black powder load.

40 grains of powder is approximately 1.5 drams (1.46).
50 grains of powder is approximately 1.8 drams (1.83).

Both are probably less than the lowest setting on your flask.

Thank you for the helpful information. You have quite an impressive flask collection, Must have taken years to amass such a fine representation of early flasks,
