I would like to hear from anyone with experience using smoothbores of about 45 caliber.

I'm thinking one could make a nice rig for deer hunting with roundballs and close range squirrel hunting with shotloads.

Please tell me about roundball accuracy and shotloads used and how well they patterned.

I have a salvaged Spanish 9mm smoothbore barrel in waiting, it was bulged about 1" from the breech. I cut off about1 1/2 inches and re-breeched it with a forged plug. I want to make a light percussion gun out of it and see how it does. I call it my 'pack rat project' since I was busy evicting one from my shop when the barrel came to light. It runs around .355 bore and is about 32" long as I recall. A real 'small game gun' for sure.

Don't let anyone put you off.That thing when done could feed a family easy.
 
Ok I braved the heat with the 45. Oh and for my British chums used shot, no need to have any anxiety attacks and go running to a committee or chief constable maybe.
Five shots skychief for six birds! First shot got two! One shot on the wing.
Well that's not quite right there was a crow as well.
All shots under 30yds and skychief no recoil, none to bother you with, a child could shoot it brother.
5/8-3/4oz on top of 4 thin cards on top of an equal measure of 3f.

You sure look happy with those six birds with five shots. It's written all over your face!!!:D

Seriously, I'm thinking a 45 smoothie is likely my next acquisition or build.
