Can anyone give me some hints about taking that shiny varnish type finish off a Zoli Zouave? Would be my first attempt at doing something like this.

Go to your local paint store and ask them for the best paint remover for varnish. Make sure you get the gel as it lays on the varnish working better than something that could run off. Follow directions. For sure do not try it without all metal components removed.

It's easy, remove all the metal parts then use a stripper of your choice (I used safety stripper) following the instructions. Then do any stock reshaping and use a block to flatten those wavy spots from the factory. Lightly sand to final finish then apply an oil finish.

IMG_0194 by Oliver Sudden, on FlickrI use coarse steel wool to loosen and rough it up. Then go lightly with med paper till it's down to just color. Then fine paper till color is light enough it won't interfere with new color. A good going over again with fine steel wool to slick the fuzz off. If you want really smooth wipe it down with hot water soaked rag and let dry. This will cause the surface to swell the soft grain which will push up. Hit it with fine steel wool.

I neglected to mention that I stained the wood to be more like American walnut.
I used the orange citrus strippe on a Zoli Zouave stock & also stained it darker to mimic a '63 Speibgfield ... came out great!
