The barrel is stamped 1-48. To the best of my knowledge (I have a Blue Grouse UH) Rice never supplied him with barrels and I believe he got all his parts from Deer creek. They warrantied the hammer & trigger on my Blue Grouse when they failed. The barrel is secured to the action by 3 allen set screws which contact the breech plug.

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, new to muzzle loading for that matter. I have not found anything I'm more passionate about since I was an adolescent. I'm not sure how to do this and I hope my questions make sense.
I am very interested in purchasing an underhammer. I would pay $350 if it is in good working condition. I do have some questions: Is the bore in good condition, is it a 1-48 or 1-60 twist? What is the length of pull and the total weight? Can I put a drop-in barrel (50 cal. Green Mountain) in it. The high comb is fine for me but is that a missing bolt/screw where the action meets the barrel? Any history on the muzzleloader would be great.

Thanks, Mike

I bought all the parts separate. I built the stock from scratch. Used copper accents. The bore seems fine. It was very accurate when I last shot it. 1-48. OAL 52" LOP 13". Any barrel can be used so long as you have an appropriate plug and the nipple is set in the bottom. It weighs about 10lbs. Barrel is 36"x7/8".

Hi 8Bore,
I replied on the forum, I hope you got my message. I'm not sure what a PM is, I've never been on forum and I'm technically challenged (born 100 years out of time).

Thanks for the info, Mike

If I buy a drop-in barrel (green mountain?) could I buy a shorter barrel/less weight, and do they fit a breech plug and nipple on the bottom for an underhammer and what is a ballpark price? I think 10 lbs will be heavy for hunting, this may be a dumb question but can the barrel be shortened to cut down the weight and how would that affect the accuracy?

Thanks, Mike

Barrels are a lot DIFFERENT for underhammers than side lock barrels. Barrels will be blank. A gunsmith will have to fit it to the underhammer lock. It would be much cheaper and user friendly for you to just buy a complete underhammer fifle.

The breech plug is a cylinder with about half threaded to screw into the barrel. The other end is smooth and is a snug fit into the hole in the action. The 3 set screws are tightened to hold it in place. You would have to locate, drill and then tap the hole for the nipple or have a machinist do it. Puting a blank barrel on one of these actions isn't difficult if you have a little experience. the barrel could be shortened easily and the front sight reinstalled. The biggest effect on accuracy would be due to the shorter sight radius more than the shorter barrel itself.

I just noticed the OP stated the gun had a Rice barrel. I missed that before my last post.

You can use any barrel of any size you want. A breachplug fitted to the barrel, then filed or ground to fit the face of the action, then let the hammer down to mark the spot to drill for the nipple. You can take this one apart to see how it all goes together.
P.S. I never hunted with this, target gun. Hence the heavy barrel.

8Bore is right. A gunsmith or machinist should fit the breachplug, the rest you can do if you have a little experience and you read up on how to. I did it.

Hi,
One of the advantages of an underhammer rifle like this, is that you can have several barrels that interchange with only loosening the set screws, and sliding in another barrel. These underhammer rifles are well known for their accuracy.
With one action you can have several different calibers.
There is no limit, other than your imagination.
You can't even buy the parts for twice the amount of the going price of this rifle.
BUT! You have to appreciate the true values of an underhammer rifle.
Fred

Dont forget about thr fore end.
One foreend for each bbl or one foreend for all bbls.
Something else to ponder. One foreend will work as long as all bbls are the same OD , octogan or round

Thanks all,
That is a ton of information to weed through. I have a good amount of options to think about. I'll start going through the the posts tonight and figure out what direction is best for me.
Thanks for the patience and knowlege shared, Mike

" I would pay $350 if it is in good working condition."

I have offered $265 with a commitment on the price.

OP where is the current price according to my offer????

Sorry, I don't want to hold up the sale, in the future I'll do my homework and be more decisive. I am going look for an underhammer in a 45 or 50 cal. that is lighter and one that I can hunt with.

Thanks, Mike

I'm writing this so you and all the others who don't know can figure out how to deal with PM's.

In case you haven't figured it out by now, PM stands for "Private Message". On the new forum software they call it a, "Conversation".
You can send a person a PM or Conversation by holding your cursor over the persons picture or, if they don't have a picture in their posts, just hold it over the place where their picture would be. Then, click on it to select it.

That will open a little black window and in that window you will see a "Start a Conversation". Select it, then put a title into the message name box and then write whatever you want to write in the area below it.

PM's can only be seen by the person you are sending it to and yourself. That's why they are called "Private".

To see if you have any PM's or to see if someone responded to your message look up in the right hand area of the forum screen for a icon that looks like an envelope. If it has a red number in it, it is telling you how many unread PM's you have.
To see your PM's hold your cursor over the envelope. It will show you the first couple of messages so you can select them.
If you want to see all of your messages there is a place at the bottom of the little window that lets you "Show All" of them so you can pick and choose which one you want to open.

Now, let's get back to the advertisement. :)

Michael,
The Blue Grouse/H & A underhammers are very flexible rifles. They will readily accept interchangeable barrels of various calibers up to an 1.25 ATF. The bolt as you are describing is one of 3 set screws that hold the barrel to the action by gripping the breech plug extension. These are easily made and are available several places. Weight varies with the barrel but in .36 it is probably not going to weigh much more than 6-7#.
