Mine is shooting pretty good at 25 yards with a .490/.015 on 65-70gns fff. Haven't had chance further yet.

I’m trying to get a 3-4 inch group at 50 and about a 6 inch group at 100. Right now I am using 70 gr of Goex 2f with 490 cast round ball and .18 thick pillow tickling patch. Barrel has a 1:48 twist.

Drop to fff. 70 should be ok but if you drop to fff start at 60 and work up.
How is the prb fit. Can you press it into the barrel with thumb pressur? If so try .495 or .020 patch or both.
Have you measured the bore to the grooves?

Seventy grains and a .490 always worked great in my TC .50 I'd play with patch material for a while.

My brother Tiny used 90 gr ffg with a .490 rb and a pillow ticking patch in a tight load, and beat several shooters at the 100 yard bench competition at the local club. He was rumored to have been in the USMC.
All guns eat different. Tight fit makes a lot of difference too.
The 50cal barrel I bought used shot just ok. I got a 1/2 inch dowel rod and made a bit that fit groove to put in an angled slot in the dowel and filed the grooves 150 strokes each. Now it shoots a whole lot better. So much so I did same on an old 45cal Kentucky and it got way better.
Lots of things can make a difference.

A well-lubed maxi-ball over 70 grains powder. Works at the range and in the woods. If ya might need more distance bump it up to 90 grains.

Bang, you're exactly right. I was just suggesting a load that might be a starting place from a meticulous shooter. These muzzleloading gizmos have very different tastes sometimes. Richard will surely find what works, but he will have to wring it out at the range. Thanks to everybody responding.
