I've finally have had the time (retired), to spend target shooting with my Traditions .32 Cal Crockett Rifle. I'm pretty happy with the shot grouping but the POI is consistently about 5 inches high. My range has been about 35 yards. The load, .310 round ball over 20 to 30 grains of 3f. I've been using .010 & .015 patches. Hope that someone can offer any ideas for getting the rifle to hit lower, many thanks.

Raise the front sight or lower the rear sight. Even if you have to replace a sight to get the amount needed. There’s even a simple formula to do that, calculations require the (r1) distance to the target, (r2) distance between sights and (d2) the amount of change needed. D2 the amount of sight change required. All measurements in inches.
D2 = r2 ( d1/r1)

From the pictures I find on the web, the distance between your sights is about 21 1/4".

If it is hitting about 5 inches high at 35 yards you will need to change the height of the sights about .084 or 3/32 of an inch.

You need to lower the rear sight about 3/32 (.093) to bring the group down. I'd mention that you could raise the front sight that much but unless you want to install a new front sight that isn't a good option.

Before you do any of this sight adjusting, try reducing the powder load to about 15 grains. That should lower the point of impact and save you some powder at the same time. :)

My action plan would depend on the sights. In particular, the quality of the rear. If it is a well made and finished sight, I would replace the front with a taller one. Then file it down to get the shots in the bull. TOW has a number of suitable replacements to fit different dovetail widths.

I would lower the powder charge. You don't need 30 gr. fff for any application of a .32 rifle. Mine loves 20 gr. but yours may different. Twenty grains of fff is pretty fast, faster than a .32 20 CF.

My .32 squirrel rifle shoots dime sized groups at 25 yards with 10 grains of 3f, a .311 cast ball and .015 mink oil lubed patch. I'm getting around 1200FPS out of the 42 inch barrel. Equal to .22 rim fire, which is all you need for squirrel hunting.

If you lower the rear sight you may find you are crowding the stock more.
Tape a temporary blade extension to the front to test the height requirement then get an extension welded on and grind or if none ferrous fit a penny and file down.

Save yourself some powder and lower the charge. Every weapon likes a certain charge better than just a standard run of the mill recommendations.

Dovetail sights aren't difficult to replace, if you decide on going that route. Filing down the rear is an option unless it's already too low.

What is d1?

I checked on track of the wolf and they do sell a number of sights such as the one I may need. The issue now for me is that I no proper measuring device to use on the dovetail for the front sight. Wonder if anybody would happen to know what fits the Traditions Crockett ? It appears that the dovetail slot is a bit smaller than the one on my Traditions Deer Hunter. If I had to guess, it looks like about 3/16th of an inch at the widest point.

I'm also planning to order another powder measure. The ones I have now will only go as low as 20 grains. TOW has one that ranges from 0 to 50 grains.

If the drop in powder doesn't fix it and you do decide to change the front sight remove it before you order one so you can measure it.
