Got a great deal on a new uberti 1858 a few months back..So took it out for the first time sat..This gun's action feels like it was built by a swiss watch maker...I think I might switch from a being colt man to a Remington lover.
Loaded it up and sat down to shoot across sand bags to see exactly where it was hitting at 25 yards...
Fired 3 groups of 6 shots of round ball with 35gr.3f.
Fired 3 groups of 6 shots of round ball with 30 gr.3f.
Good news is both loads shoot to the exact same point of aim .
The bad news is they shoot """"PATTERNS""""" !!!
The closest thing to a group would be 8"wide by 10-12" from top to bottom.
I had high hopes for this gun seeing my other uberti an 1851 navy will shoot 2" groups from sand bags.
The Navy has .379 chamber mouths and .379 barrel grooves..
So when I checked the 1858 I loaded each chamber dry then removed the nipples and drove the ball out with a brass rod .
I drove a ball through the barrel to check groove size.
The chambers measure between .447 and .449
The barrel grooves measure .452
Soooooooo.....
I ordered a .453 REAMER...
Will let you all know the results after I open up the chamber mouths,
Until then, I will be sitting out by the mail box!

I have the Remington and the 1860 Colt, both Uberti. I shoot the Colt the most, I think it looks nicer plus I can use a capper with it. I get frustrated fumbling with caps on the Remington but is still a nice gun.

Soon as it warms up I'm going to get my Pietta 1860 out again. It's been years since I shot it as I usually only shoot when going to a match and the Rem 58 is my go to gun for that. I had to do quite a bit of work on the 60 to get it shooting but I remember it is accurate to 25 yards tested with full throttle loads. The front sight was removed and a square back blade installed along with a new trigger and return spring for bolt and trigger. It has also been set back a bit to close up the cylinder gap and the hammer face bushed with a plug of tool steel for better ignition contact with nipple.
I think that gun is nearly if not just as accurate as my ROA which is always a surprise to me as they are not very rigid compared to a solid frame gun.

A good ream job should make a huge difference but I would also take a look at your cone to see if it is even cut on center. You should be alright at only .001 over groove diameter but also check for a tight bore just ahead of the forcing cone where the barrel goes through the frame. If this is tight and usually is on production guns and is where you formed your measuring slug then the .001 over groove diameter reamer should work well when you get the tight spot lapped out, if present. If tight under the frame threads then the bore will need lapped out to level for best accuracy.

Well finally got around to getting the Remington out after reaming the cylinder..It was early and was shooting into the sun(That's my excuse).Anyway after reaming the cylinder to .454 my groups went from 12" down to 4" ..I'm betting I can get them down even more if I take the shine off my front sight...Or just shoot on cloudy days.

I shoot 25gn at 25 yards in my 58s and they will hit in 2inches all day.
My walker did a lot better after I reworked the crown, eased the cone angle and gave it a good smoothing.
The cylinder ream up to .453 too.
How much did it help? Well it was hitting 12 inches high and 12 inches right. Now it hits on center 4 inches high at 25 yards which is pretty normal for a walker.
Point is check everything.

Nother thing to try is larger balls.

When using say .457 balls, you get a spiffy nice flat on the ball sides ... and ... the larger the ball begins with, the longer this flat will be.

The flat comes to happen when you load the ball and shave the ring with the loading lever

Rello. It`s very easy to fix cylinders for caping a little filing or Dremel tool work and it is great. Lots of videos to show how. I have done all of mine, works terrific

Buzz.

I will only own one Remington 1858 and it will be the Uberti 18" carbine version as soon as I pay off the layaway.

I only bought it to get around the "no rifles in the 50 yard pistol pits" at my gun club so I can use it for 50 yard target shooting and not be a bad guy.

I'll probably still like my stocked 51 Navy better but I've always wanted one of the 1858 Remington Carbines so no time like the present

I recently got an 1858 to add to my "Good Bad and Ugly" collection.
Angel Eyes carried the New Model Army. I took the bluing off the loading lever to match his.

And opened up the nipple area like mentioned on YT.
