Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I have zero experience with Black Powder guns. I am helping a family member sell some of her deceased husbands guns and he had one black powder gun that I know zero about.

I think it is a kit gun but I cant be sure. I have removed the barrel and there is no markings that I find useful. There is a serial number on the barrel, and the markings " for Black Powder only" and there is a small circle that is cut in half with a zig zag line ( see photo) with the words 50 Cal. Inside of the patch pocket on the butt stock there is the stamp of what appears to be AF and the number 6813pl engraved (see photo)

The octagon barrel is 33 inches long and the over all length is 49.5 inches long.

I have someone that wants to buy it but I have no idea what to ask for it. I have found kits for sale new from $400 to $1200. I want to make sure the widow gets what is a fair price for it without ripping the buyer off.

Any help would be appreciated.

The rifle looks like one of the "Hawken" style guns made by Thompson Center.
It has had the barrel changed to one that was made by Green Mountain. Green Mountain barrels are excellent and at one time they made a "drop in" barrel for the TC stocks.

If the barrels bore is not rusty, IMO the gun would be worth about $400-$500. Part of this price is due to the Green Mountain barrel. A TC Hawken without the GM barrel would be worth around $75-$100 less.

Because this is a modern made gun, the topic does not belong in the "Firearm Identification" area of the forum so I'm moving this to the Percussion rifle section.
The Firearm Identification area is for original firearms that were made prior to 1865.

The rifle looks like a T/C Hawken kit gun with a Green Mountain barrel. Not to pleased with the inletting of the patch box, but all else looks good. If the barrel is in good condition, the rifle should be about priced as Zonie suggests.

Really all I can do is agree with Zonie's assessment.

A Thompson Center Hawken kit gun with a Green Mountain ‘drop-in’ roundball barrel on it. Whoever ‘finished’ the stock didn’t know you’re supposed to leave the brass parts on while you sand it. That’s why the area around the patchbox is so screwed up. Besides that, the lock panels are all rounded off & looks like they stripped the colors off the lock. The Green Mountain barrel is about the only sellin’ point to it & even with that 300 to 350 would be a much more realistic price for the gun.

Wow, this is great information and it helps me set the price. He offered me 150 and I told him I would need to research it and I am glad I did. I really appreciate you folks taking the time to help me out.

Thanks
Rick

I would be looking down the barrel with a bore light before I did anything. So many of these guns were not cleaned properly and have rust pitting in the barrel, cleaned right the inside should look like a mirror.

With some careful work and the application of a certain amount of skill it could be made-over into a very nice rifle.

With all the massive over-sanding on that stock in critical areas, good luck on makin’ it into anything ‘nice’. Replacement is about the only fix for that.

I would suggest $300 for the gun, the stock work is pretty bad but the barrel is one of the best. It doesn't have to be pretty if it shoots well for you and you plan to keep it. The drop-in GM barrel goes for $269 from Track of the Wolf, a used one like you have will be a bit less. There is a replacement stock on eBay now for $119 should you want to refinish the gun and bring your gun up to like new condition. You could probably put your old stock on Ebay flaws and all and get at least $50 for it.
