Hi,
Good luck with your Mortimer rifle.
The lock and stock are worth much more than what you paid for it.
Getting a 1" X .54 cal. barrel is easy, and turning the barrel to fit your stock is easy as well.
Mark Lee's browning solution from Track of the Wolf will finish your barrel close to the finish of the original.
If you get a breech plug slightly larger than the original, will be an easy fit.
YOU are one lucky stiff to get the stock and lock for $50..........hell, I'll give $51 dollars and I'll even pay the shipping.
Now that's a deal!

Thanks for the tips. I agree that it was a lucky catch, but will have to turn-down your generous offer: I already have an offer of 3X what I paid...

Saw this “Mortimer” thread and since I have one I had to take a peek.

I have had some previous MZ experience but it was all old stuff or the new in-lines. Just didn’t scratch my itch. A REAL MZ would have to be a flinter right?

I ended up picking up a Mortimer that a gent had to part with. He had done a ton of custom work on it to dress it up. One of the things he did was install a custom barrel.

Strangely enough when he sold it he included both barrels! Just got up and looked in the safe, yup, second barrel is still setting there!

I had always thought I would keep it just so I could make the rifle again if I so desired. But in reality that will never happen due to all the custom work that has been done to the rest of the rifle.

Not excited about selling it but the thought of getting another Mortimer up and running is quite intriguing. That is waaaay to good of a rifle to be just setting there. Especially not for another 15 years!

If your interested in the barrel you can send me a PM.

Cheers!

That's quite a coincidence, and I appreciate the offer. But, in the meantime, I've sort of decided to make a 20 bore rifle of it, with a full octagon barrel, which would be more in-line with my ideal of a British flint sporting rifle of the Mortimer's era.

Mike

Good on you, just don’t take 15 years to do it! Seriously, will you be tackling it soon or will it be going into the to-do stack? Would be fun to see it operational soon.

Just out of curiosity, size wise how does a 20 bore stack up against a .54?

I’ve got any number of 20 GAGE shotguns but cannot remember if Bore is the same as gage. If it is would that make it around a .72 cal?

I harvested a deer the first year I had the Mortimer. Did not know what to expect from that scrawny looking round ball. I am so used to “judging” a round by its weight. In that regards a .54 round ball is not that impressive. I can tell you I was impressed at what it did to the deer! Big hole going in, bigger one going out! I’m a believer!

Anyway, good luck on your project, sounds like it will be an interesting one!

PS. I’ll try to post some pics of my Mortimer and all the kit I got in the deal just so as people don’t think I’m just a teller of tall tales and a smoke blower (I am but that’s besides the point!).

Cheers!

Wade

Gauge indicates the number of round lead balls it takes to weigh a pound.

A 20 gauge cylinder bore will measure 0.615". A 0.750" bore is close to 11 gauge. A 0.540" ball is 28 gauge. A .0540" ball is certainly not puny when used for hunting deer sized game.

So, my question: is there any hope of acquiring a factory barrel for it, or am I going to have to make one?
Neither VTI nor Taylor's & Company have barrels for you. The Rifle Shoppe doesn't seem to offer much in the way of civilian rifles. So you're going to have to look into an octagon to round barrel https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/653/1/BBL-54-42. You can have it fitted for a hooked breech. You will also need to solder on an under-rib, and thimbles.

Trigger:

It's in the 'to do' list, with about a 'B' priority. I'm not sure what that really means in terms of urgency, but I hope to get it done before I'm too old to enjoy it. I'll update with any progress reports...

Grenadier has the right of it on the bore size.

Pedersoli replacement barrels and stocks cost nearly as much as an entire new gun; you'd be better off finding someone to make a copy that will fit.
