Hello I have had this rifle for several years now and haven't been able to get much information on it. I was hoping someone had seen something like it before. The only markings I have found is S Smith written on the lock plate.
Thank you for your time

There were literally thousands of gunmakers when this one was made 1850 or so. Hard to say where but the long tang points south, perhaps.

Looks like a plains rifle with a really heavy barrel made to handle heavy long range charges and to be carried mostly on horseback. The long tang helped soak up recoil to save the wrist. Rear sight looks converted to adjustable, but may have been originally a plains style(?). --- Snuffy Smith was an old timer who lived in a cabin on the side of a cliff in the Appalachians in the funny papers. I bet that's his old hog rifle. If it is, it's priceless.

Many late halfstock percussion rifles not made in the big shops used all purchased components. Barrel, lock, buttplate, guard, triggers, patchbox
