Here is my fowler short starter for patched balls;

I don't sweat the small stuff Gus.

On my starter; I pop the ball just inside the barrel and cut the patch then use the rest of the length to get the patched ball past my jug choke, I made it a little long on purpose.
 
That's an excellent point. Come to think of it, my old Brown Bess Carbine Rammer had a button on the end that must have been just large enough that cards didn't slip in the bore. I just never thought about it at the time, though.

My 1850's 12G. sxs ramrod has a button on the end also. Never understood why till I read this post though. Makes a lot of sense now.
