I know I'm new and not the best when it comes to BP. Does anyone use break free to clean and then spray down with Remington Oil?

I too have some Remington oil on hand and it works wonders on my "other" guns. I'm a little curious what it would do to for a ML. Afterall any oil is better than no oil but I haven't seen too many recommendations for its use as of yet.

Regular oils in your bore is a bad thing with black powder. Black powder is water soluable and oils will only result in sludge mixing them together. I like break free with modern rifles, but not with muzzleloaders.

I don't use Break Free but have use Rem. oil, as long as you wipe the bore before shooting it, it will be fine. Not my favorite by a long shot. I like and use Ballistol mostly. Just one mans opinion, and you know how opinion's are.

I have used Rem Oil for a very long time and never had a problem with rust nor anything else.

Lot of people seen to get worry about petroleum oil in their ML. All you have to do is wipe the bore with a patch with some rubbing alcohol and you are good to go. Never had a problem using it.

Sage advice.

I know shooters who use WD-40 and synthetic motor oil mixed 50/50 for patch lube and they keep winning national championships. That mixture has been used for years at Friendship.

Break free isn’t for cleaning a bp gun, it’s a good oil as is Remington oil after. Cleaning is done with water with or with out a bit of soap or your choice of additives.

After handling my BP revolvers, as I’m prone to do when not shooting; I wipe them down with Rem oil, as it’s something I have on hand. As for internal ludrication I use non detergent synthetic 30W oil. Simply because I have a lot of it, and use it on both my airguns, and moderns.

No experience with Rem oil. But, I have used Break Free for many years on the moving parts of modern guns and consider it a great product for that purpose. For your ml rifles Barricade is what you need to use for protection. Opinions vary on what to put on the moving parts of your locks. Almost any oil, used sparingly, is fine.

I learned one lesson many years ago with a .62 caliber flinter. I was using break free in the bore, and after several shots, it would misfire regularly. I spoke with the builder of the gun, and the first thing he told me was to not use petroleum based oils in the bore, as it was the culprit in my problem. The touch hole on my Wilson's trade gun was positioned close enough to the breech plug that the crud buildup was blocking the hole. I followed his advice and scrubbed out the barrel and quit using petroleum products and the problem was solved. I still own the rifle, and it is very dependable now and seldom has a misfire. He said they scrub out all the oils used in manufacturing from the barrels before they are sent out...just to avoid such a problem.
