Hello All,
Been away for a while. I bought my GPH a few years ago and had a few issues. The issues were mainly me. I got some great info and help from members on this site. I finally got a load worked up that allowed good accuracy. This past December everything came together and I took a nice doe on the first day of the season. Thanks to everyone that offered and provided help.

I shot her at about 30 yards. I was using a Hornady .50 cal round ball. Using 90 grains of Goex FFg.
I was just getting back to where I was sitting when I saw her coming. There was fresh snow on the branches. I got positioned and got ready to shoot. I am using a peep sight. I raised the gun to take aim. I couldn’t see the deer. Lowered the gun and there she was. Raised the gun, no deer. What the ....? Then I looked at the gun and noticed some snow had fallen on the sight. Cleared the snow and made the shot. I knew I hit her. Reloaded and went after her. Went about 40 yards and she was standing there broadside but looking poorly. Took another shot and she ran about 30 yards and it was game over. When I was processing her I found the first round ball. I was really quite surprised at its shape. See attached photo.
Hope this isn’t TMI (too much info).

I didn’t expect it to be as flat as it is.
It’s my first deer with a round ball. I have very limited experience with muzzle loaders.

Congratulations. :thumb:

That ball did exactly what it was supposed to do.

People who shoot modern rifles often criticize the roundball because the guns we shoot don't shoot at high velocities but what they forget is, our patched roundballs are far bigger in diameter than most modern guns bullets so they poke a larger hole just entering the animal. Then, they expand even larger, tearing up anything in their path and transmitting almost all of their energy to the beast in the process.

That's why just using just "energy" to figure out what the "killing power" of a gun like modern gun shooters do doesn't even begin to tell the whole story.

Yep, modern bullets use modern technology to do what a round ball does naturally.

Zonie,
Thanks for that info. Very interesting and informative. Definitely gives me a better understanding on traditional weapons. I really didn’t appreciate the power of tradition weapons.

Not to mention a lot of folks who talk "energy" need to go back to high school physics, since they don't even understand what their modern projectile is doing, and thus have no clue what our projectiles do.

I've actually had folks tell me that (based on the energy) that my .530 round ball isn't lethal and thus not ethical out past 50 yards....,
