I thought I knew my way around the Colt replicas, but just received, for free, a really nice '51 from a person that is VERY un-mechanically inclined, to say the least. I don't know what was originally wrong with the pistol, but this person tried to "fix" it. Cylinder is loaded, !!!! but pistol does not function to say the least. Out of time, sometimes cocks, sometimes doesn't, no half cock, hair trigger when it does cock, etc.

On the outside, the gun is beautiful, looks brand new with no blemishes. Very possibly never fired.

My question is, the barrel is marked "Lyman Middlefield Conn", which I haven't seen before. Does anyone know right off hand who the Lyman 1851's were made by? I have a sneaking suspicion that I may need some spare parts, :) although I suppose I can fit any of the internal parts regardless of manufacturer.

Yes, Lyman did distribute such revolvers back in the 1960's. You should have a proof stamp on the barrel to indicate year of proofing.

What does it look like after you take it all apart? You may, if you feel lucky, find the internals a filled with dried on grease. Not so lucky, the hand and spring are broken. No matter what the gun needs to be taken apart and all parts inspected.
 
A gunsmith posted that he had a 1971 Lyman Remington that was made by Uberti.
Another posted that he saw a Lyman Remington that had an Uberti logo on it.
Another posted about a Lyman Colt 1860 proofed in 1980 that was made by Armi San Paolo with the maker's mark of GDG in a circle.
It was also stated that the GDG gun seemed to be made of soft metal.
A 4th person who is a known expert stated that he had a Lyman .36 caliber 1851 made by ASP without any safety pins on the back of the cylinder.
Armi San Paolo became Euroarms.
Euroarms Remington cylinders were very close to Uberti spec's, with some being a drop in fit, much moreso than Pietta.
Some ASM [Armi San Marco] parts may also fit ASP - Euroarms.
But it's unclear whether that's true for both the Lyman Colts and Remingtons.

Did you get the cylinder unloaded? If not one could use a ball pulling screw to pull the balls or I've also pulled the nipples, emptied out as much powder as possible through the nipple hole and then used a small caliber ramrod to push the ball out from the back.
