Howdy There Huntschool!
I was wonderin' when you'd peer out of the thicket and holler. You might've seen Ol' Ugly -- I swapped for her in `82 at the Western near Vernal. Gator had it on his trade blanket. How are you and Magpie doin'?

Ok guys time to bump this one up again. After much delay, my wife got a clean cancer screening Tuesday, i can now start back on this. Got most of my components together so now need to start assembling stuff. The barrel is a 6" Dikar in 45 which does not appear to have been fired. The powder drum is missing so i can make a flint vent from a ss 10X1.25 metric bolt that will fit all the way in like the original drum and nipple did. I my add a smaller removable vent like a 1/4X28 from TOTW. If i cut the barrel to 5" it will flush up with the stock end. The butt of the stock will be rounded and the front thinned way down and a new ramrod hole drilled and a thimble added. I have another trigger ordered, shotgun style, so i can alter the pivot point to lighten it up. The lock needs some cleaning up. The wood has some nice figure to it. A little walnut stain with some cherry over that may look pretty nice. Give it a reddish tint. Would like to find a steel trigger guard, side plate, and a steel thimble for up front. Have not decided on sights yet. Got time for that. Does anyone know what size flint this CVA lock uses? Virgin territory for me here. As always suggestions are appreciated and welcomed.

I have several parts left from trades I've done . One complete Colonial kit and almost enough to do 2 more Colonial kits. I may take one and maybe build something like this.

It is a 5" barreled full stock pistol. I would also like to take one kit and make a 3" shorty type hideout gun. Kinda like a daringer only bigger.

You guys got any ideas to kick aroundaround?

Nice photos! The burial plot for Henry Deringer is in Philadelphia's famous Woodlands Cemetery; I've been there.

My CVA flintlock takes a 5/8x5/8 flint, but could go longer not wider.

Glad your wife got good news. Hope this turns into a good build for you.

You got a preference on where you buy your flints? Is there only one type or several types? Wrap in leather or lead? Like i said i am virgin here.
DL

I've used lead in my muskets, but more experienced shooters
seem to prefer leather in rifles; I forget the exact reason that
was expressed, but using the lead in a civilian type rifle just
doesn't seem "right" somehow. Personal choice always prevails.

DL,
I have been buying them from a couple different sources. I prefer to buy in person or from a reputable party to get the best quality possible. TOW has them, and have heard good things about their flints, but have no experience with them. Wrap in leather, it holds better especially with smaller flints. A good resource for a flintlock newbie is "Flintlocks A Practical Guide for their Use and Appreciation" by Eric A. Bye

Yikes! I have that book! Invaluable! Heartily recommended!

Using lead in light weight locks reduces cock speed and can break the cock. Lead requires much greater clamping force to hold the flint securely. It greatly increases weight and inertia. I don't use lead as flint wraps. Tried it once did not like it.

I would not recommend a removable vent. A properly installed vent liner never needs to be removed and should not be unless it needs to be replaced. I make my own and prefer to install against a shoulder.
They are fast and very reliable. I use Magic Marker to show the high spots and make sure it seals at the bottom of the counterbore and at the countersunk area at the barrel flat. This is 12x32 IIRC. The small hole to the bore greatly reduces the pressure on the liner and its just slightly larger by a few thousands than the cavity in the liner. Also by using the counter bore the vent can be set right at the breech face with but may, depending on the breechplug diameter, require removing the vent liner to remove the breechplug. Another thing that need only be done in the most dire circumstances. Like having the bore "freshed" or recut. The end result is powder right next to the pan since there is only about .030 of small diameter vent. This is FFF powder. Vent liner is 303 or 304 stainless.

Howdy Lee,
My humble apology .... I lost track o' this thread and didn't even see yr question until just now. My lodge is in the edge of the Hill Country, about half-way betwixt San Antonio and Austin. You? For whatever it's worth, I like the looks of that flint pistol you're putting together. D'ye plan a belt hook for it?

Dont know about the belt hook. I will cobble together a cross draw type holster for it. Seen several designs and one that covers the lock and flint area is preferred. RAT had one made that protected cap from hammer when carried. A take off on that style will work for me.

I hale from south of DFW near Ennis. Stay in the country. Ennis is home to annual National Polka Festival. Lots of Czech people here. Married into the fold and love every minute of it.

Howdy DL,
Yep ... I've been through Ennis. We've got kin living near DFW. Had a friend who was from the area --- Folks called him the "Bad Czech." A while back you asked about flint sizes. Old Ugly prefers one between 1/2 and 5/8 inch. I got a bunch of `em years ago and haven't bought any in a long time now. I like the belt hook because I can just tuck it behind a sash or even the top of my britches even if I'm not wearing a belt.

Ok not much work on the flintlock but i did get a cheap holster to modify to work with it though.
