Brake Cleaner For Extended Shooting Sessions?

MAP is an equal parts mix of Murphy's oil soap, rubbing Alcohol, and hydrogen Peroxide.

You can just use the rubbing alcohol for a cheap cleaning solution and quick drying wipe of the bore.

For hunting I went to Walmart and bought one of the small travel bottles of pump hair spray.

Dumped the hair spray, rinsed the bottle with water and put in my cleaning solution. Small, light, fits in the bag with room to spare and always have cleaning solution.

Sounds like you do not swab between shots. Try that using a damp patch with spit.

Good idea. I definitely could benefit from swabbing in between shots.

Murphys Oil Soap, Alcohol, Peroxide - equal amounts.
It's a universal black powder cleaner. Drop a dirty nipple in it and watch it fizz away the junk!

If you are not using the dutch system try it (he a member here, just post and he'll send you a copy for a well worth it $20.00). If that dont appeal to you USE HOPPES black powder solvent and patch lubricant. Well dampened but not wet patch under yer round ball and you will shoot all day, thr patch wipes the fouling as you load the next shot. I found the dutch system tightens up my groups and use it most the time.

It's a mixture that many people liked back in the 1970's and still do for cleaning their muzzleloaders and for wiping the fouling out when their shooting.

Many of us think the Peroxide can be replaced with just plain water for a lot less cost. I guess the stuff without Peroxide would be called MAW.

I can hear them at the range now. "Don't go shooting without your MAW close by."

I asked this question on another thread a month or so ago and never did get an answer. Is there a "generic" version or a similar product besides Murphys on the market? Surely Murphy can't control the whole Oil Soap market.

Yes, right there is your issue if things are gumming up. I personally am not at all afraid of brake clean.. I use it to clean my barrel out after long periods of storage. Just dampen a patch and swab a few times... I remove the nipple for this, or simply use the tube that comes with my can and spray a little directly into the touch hole.. I don’t over do it because, like others have said, it can and will harm your finish. Just use it with caution and common sense. I’ve actually harmed my finish using MAP before... I can’t recall what the finish was though, it’s been years ago, Alcohol based fieblings leather dye comes to mind.

I don't think there are many but doing a search for "oil soap" on Google I found another product that seems to be about the same as Murphy's.

As for Murphy's Oil Soap, follow this link to Wikipedia to see what they have to say about it.
Interestingly, it talks about black powder gun cleaning and a bunch of other things it's good for like cleaning oil paint out of artists brushes.

Murphys oil soap works good and you can find it anywhere, why would you want a generic brand ? You get what you paid for, guns cost lots of money why go cheap on cleaning or oil?

Thank you Zonie for that link on Murphys, it's giving me some ideas. Especially that part about using diluted Murphys in the garden. There are certain bugs that love my tomatos this time of the year. I try and go the "organic" route and not use poisons.
Also I would think it could be to ones advantage to know about differant substitutes, particularly in our hobby. The day just may come that a product you know and use regularly isnt available. For what ever reason your familiar thing just may not be there on the shelf. It wouldn't hurt to know what would work in its place.

As long as you can find a mud puddle, you can clean your smoke pole.

I was wondering if you'd catch that. You can make your own puddle by peeing in the dirt.

The alcohol is Isopropyl. 91 % is what most fans of MAP use. You'll find differing opinions about the percentages of the ingredients, as well as differing opinions regarding the use of Hydrogen Peroxide. I'm not recommending MAP, just responding to the question.

It sounds like something that would get the job done. There has been no negative remarks about it. I've been assurred that the Peroxide will not harm the finish even though I've heard otherwise.
