I don't know what the deal is around here. Cabelas and Bass Pro aren't carrying any BP pistol ammo. I found one box of .457 balls and one box of .452 balls for revolvers. No patches did I find. No pistol blackpowder on their shelves. I found some starter kits for revolvers and only one kit pistol in both stores. When I questioned employees about this they stated we don't sell enough to stock it. Order online and have shipped to store free. So I just ordered from TOW and had delivered to MY door. Much cheaper and got all in stock. Now I can shoot my half stocked .45 this weekend. Cabelas and Bass Pro muzzle loader sections almost non existent in DFW.

For what it's worth, you will never see real black powder setting on a shelf in a store.

By Federal mandate, all real black powder a store sells must be kept under lock and key in a specially designed storage container.
They could sit empty cans that once held black powder on their shelves but most don't bother to even go that far.

Because real black powder must be locked up, many times the general employees working there won't even know the store has it for sale. That's why it's best to talk to the stores general manager or the owner of the store to ask him if they sell it.

Yes I know powder won't be on display. There was Pyrodex and another on the shelf in 2F. What got me was balls, wads, caps, and rifles and handguns were missing. Clearly their focus is not on the BP sport in this area. I looked on line at their stores and didn't see much. Most of my business goes to TOW and other online stores.

Thunderbird Cartridge Co. in southwest Phoenix is the only place I know of that carries black powder here.

As the name indicates, they are into cartridge guns and there are quite a few people here who shoot in BPCR competition.

For anyone in the area wondering what their address is, it is: 7215 W Southern Ave (Laveen Village).
It's a good idea to give them a call before you go. During slack times in the season they sometimes close for weeks. They also want to be called so they can get the powder out of the storage area for you.

Graf & Son carries black powder and it is less expensive by ten bucks a pound than I can buy it here in Yuma at a local gun shop. Buy over a certain amount and the hazmat goes away.

I found this true when I went to Bass Pro shop here in eastern Tennessee. They, in fact, do sell black powder but it is kept in the back (locked up I guess) and you have to ask for it specifically. They do carry all granulations F - 4F and you must tell them what you want. I think I paid something like $12.95 per pound fer it. It's been a while since I've bought black powder locally.

One local shop keeps an empty Goex can on the shelf but the actual powder is locked in an approved powder magazine out back.

BATF regulations require an approved container that I believe can hold up to 50 pounds. After that, IIRC, there are special bunker provisions for storing amounts over 50 pounds. Not sure how comparable the powder is, but a German shop sells Boller pulver for muzzle loading salute guns for the equivalent of $10.69 a pound and that includes their value added tax. I am not sure how much that tax is, maybe 15 or 20%. Wano powder for 21 Euros a Kilo, A Euro is currently $1.12 dollars so a kilo would cost $23.52. A Kilo is 2.2 pounds so a pound of powder is $10.69 including VAT. And that is retail price. Americans are getting screwed. (Although special police permits are required for individuals to have black powder in Germany.)

Most dealers stopped carrying the revolver bullets and ball sizes. They told some guys to get a mold and make them, UNLESS you order a case (20 Boxes or more) Paid when ordered. That includes S&H and tax. I have a single shot .45 caliber. Most single shots use the same ball as the rifle does, so no problemo!

2 houses over, I had a neighbor from HELL, that gave this CVA .45 cal KY pistol to his son for Christmas in 1981. They slapped it together in the spring of '82 and just put shellac on the WHOLE thing. Metal and all. In Jan '83 the dad was away on a work trip when he sent his wife a DEAR JANE letter. It had a legal Doc for devorce, and giving her the paid off house and SUV, 75% of the savings and checking acct. (He pre took out the rest,) Asked her to sign the doc, mail to the Attorney, and told her to have a good life with their son and daughter and don't look him up. Your thinking what I did. Later in June '83 she had a garage sale (Prior to a house sale). I walked up while I went to get the mail, stopped to browse, and spied the pistol under the table and I asked her what she wanted, The son whom I'd coached in Baseball previously, told me he was asking $5 but decided to give it to me since he knew I did that sport (BP) that's why it was under the table in the box. I told him it was worth way more than that. He said he wanted no fatherly memories and wanted me to have it for all my help to him and the other kids. I told him I wanted to give him $25 since the barrel was plugged up and we didn't know why. He said no, but If I wasn't going to just take it, he'd take the $5 it was tagged at. So that's what I paid for it. When they were loading up months later, to move, I helped them load the truck and trailer. So, It's a $5 garage sale pistol. After about 2 months from their move, I got time to work on it . I thought the Barrel was rusted shut, or worse. It was plugged 1/2 way with a rust prevention cloth. Shiney bore like new.I completely striped the shellac of everything; refinished the metal (It was just as cast);stained and finished the stock. I got the .440 balls, went to the range and tried it out. WOW, could hardly move the trigger, needed 2 hands to pull it. I took it to the late Phil Cravener, my friend and mentor. He put the scale to the trigger. Yeah WOW; 23.25 # pull. I let him have it and he gave it back with a 3# pull. One hand steady working. Shoots like a charm. I've won 20+/- pistol events at rendezvous over the years. She's not the best to look at, but she's true and never let me down. I call her "Puppy". She was lost, I rescued her and she's loyal & true.
